Something you Remember... but Why ?

Was a time I liked to gamble. Got more convenient when the Indian casinos opened up in my state. Now have zero interest. Was sad, more like pathetic, watching people who were dumping their SS and welfare checks at the machines. They looked desperate for any spin that gave them a few lousy bucks after dumping in fifty. And when one would get a rare win, geezuz, they damn near had sex with the machine and wouldn’t leave it thinking it was now their friend going to hit just for them again.

After an Indian casino opened in a city near me, caught an article on the insane profits and how much ******* cash the state gleaned! Yep, winners were da reservation and the gov. All those sorry-*** souls w/o a pot to piss in donated. They empty their bank accounts at ATM’s in the place, or pay to write a check at the counter. Lines of people waiting to use the ATM’s. I joked about the ONLY machines giving out cash were the ATM’s.

Get a kick viewing commercials to go to the casino, all pretty people, young, dressed like they’re going to a wedding, all laughing, giddy…like everyone of them is winning. LOL! They don’t look like the people I’ve seen there! Old, fat, ugly, wearing clothes Goodwill wouldn’t sell. Hmm, must have done the commercial when none a those people were around. More like, get all them ugly poor fucks out so we can shoot the commercial.

I always say that the hostesses at the Red Lobsters have my picture just in case I show up for Endless Shrimp!

My wife would have seminars at the casinos in Atlantic City. I would park, go in with her and then go pay my admission, $20, loose it all in the first machine I got to and then went out to the Boardwalk to do something touristy!

Probably like every vet here, I can still rattle off my service number (before it was changed to SS number) faster than you could write it down. Damned if I know why. Haven't needed or used it in over 50 years.

My mom could rattle off dad's service number! I had a '55 Mercedes 190SL 5500555! When I e-mailed Darrell Davis about his source book I gave him the build date, colors, engine and trans and he came back and gave me the VIN which I had not given him! I am a numbers guy not a math guy. There is a lot of stuff that's faded into obscurity. I worked at an Audi dealer and I was the guy in parts that could enter a complete 5000 front hit out of my head into the computer.

That is bullshit. Casinos drain the pockets of 95% of their customers and when someone has an edge, they are banned??
Absolutely they are banned and don't give them any reason to think you are counting cards when playing blackjack.

I had my SSN memorized before I was 10. Address, phone numbers, all that stuff as a kid just....stuck.

1B3XG24J4MG132...yea, memorized the VIN for my '91 Daytona (first new car I bought) years ago. It's still in the garage, runnin' strong!

I've got my insurance policy memorized - sucks when they need to see my insurance card on the side of the road, but whatever.

MD DL number is 13 digits; memorized that years ago.

Dad was a CPA - that helped with the number thing ;)

Used to be, I could hear a conversation across a room, not even be part of it, and it would stick for months.

Then, in '08...my accident, severe bodily injuries, months of rehab (learning to walk at 34 years of age? SUCKS)...and 2 head injuries. Nowadays, the old stuff is still there - if it was stuck before, it stayed stuck. But anything new? I have to try ten times as hard to commit it to memory. Names? Nope. Not happenin'. I'll remember your face. I'll remember your car. I'll remember what instrument you play and what band you're in. I'll remember what whisky you drink and what beer you like...but goddamit, what's your NAME??

I'm sure a lot of it is age...closing in on a half century here...but I still blame the accident every chance I get!

Well - sure sounds like you have a good excuse. Always sucked remembering names and would be embarrassed when people I met remembered mine.

I can remember **** from decade/s ago,
cam specs I had ran or bore #'s rod lengths clearances etc.

I have the mindset, that I remember what's important
To me, don't care about most others other than the kids
since Lisa (RIP) is gone
Lot of fond memories about doing special things with her
& the horses' other animals or my racing etc., vivid memories...

I'm horrible at names now
I think it's because I'm not really mingling 'a lot' like I used to
& it's like I don't care, unless it's someone or for something important
or someone I actually care about now...
why remember their name ? if I won't talk or see them

I used to remember all the reg. people (names & job titles too),
I delt with in the 125 dealerships I serviced, for 25+ years, hundreds of them
especially dept. heads/managers/owners

I can't remember what I had 3 days ago for dinner
(probably would come to me... but why ? I don't care)
but;
I can remember **** from some stupid 'thread post here'
for months if not years
especially if it's one of the haters/pricks that post it,
strange really
or remember what (#'s or mph/times) I ran in a car 15-20+ or more years ago,
even the tune that was in it, tires gears shocks carbs
fuel pills/nozzles & pump sizes or bypasses for fuel injection
or some obscure camshaft/rocker specs etc.

In my case I think it's now more than ever
I don't want to remember a lot of stuff, it's needless
way to much stored already, nonsense BS, why ?

I can remember specific conversations with certain people
especially, if I looked up to or really respected them,
the other noise around, it wasn't important,
I couldn't tell you what was going on hardly...

I have learned to tune people out, especially rude or argumentative people
or arrogant or bloviating a--holes/knowitalls (that think they do)
or IGNORE people I don't care about now

I think it's selective memory
the older I get the more short-term memory doesn't seem as important
it's like I don't care, if I can look it up easy enough
why remember it ? :realcrazy:
lot of stuff up there, some stupid **** I should remember
& some **** I wish I could forget

I can remember the exact word from the Dr. when my dad's in the hospital
(or what they said "exactly" when Lisa was in, some 20 years ago)
but can't remember what Rx's, my dad needs to take daily

But I remember almost all my relative's Birthdays
even ones that are gone now
I make a point of talking to them (live ones), sending a card, call or e-mail etc.

I remember some stuff I really don't need too also
car **** from cars I don't own & haven't for decades
or projects I did 'from decades ago'
some are clear as day, some are really foggy

I think we remember what we want, need to

I remember stuff way better if I commit it to paper/write it down
when I actually care about remembering it now

When I attended the live-on California Highway Patrol Academy in 1982 after few weeks I had learned the 70 names of the cadets in my section of the class. I was 27 years-old then. Today, at 67 nothing doing.

The brain is so complex, different areas store different memories. Frontal lobes are primarily memory centers. This is partly why boxers and football players often develop memory troubles. San Francisco 49ers QB Joe Montana has some huge holes in his memory from all the hits he took. Not everyone develops memory loss but the impacts sure don’t help matters.
Muhammad Ali was first thought to have “Pugilistic Dementia” before he was finally diagnosed with Parkinson’s.
Even as a kid I recall old timers that seemed to dwell on the old days, chatting about stuff from the 1930s and 40s. It didn’t occur to me that they may only be talking about what they can clearly remember. Mom used to call them “senile”.

I remember weird stuff as well, several of my family’s license plate numbers from when I was about 7 years old up through high school, family and friend’s phone numbers from when you actually had to remember them in order to call them and the weirdest one is my locker combination from freshman year of high school…39-13-25. I’m 39 so it’s been about 25 years since I’ve used it…I can still remember my hand trembling the morning of the first day of school as I struggled to get the locker open.

I am going to get a little bit off track here.

Don't we all like pleasant memories? I think most of us don't remember (or maybe we tune out) unpleasant memories. Unfortunately, some people have imprinted truly traumatic memories. Tragic.

I don't think a good memory is necessarily related to intelligence as I've known some mentally challenged people (not disturbed) that have exceptional recall of past events. They just weren't gifted with average or above average "processing" (as far as I could tell).

How about musically talented people??? I've known people that know every note, nuance, and lyrics of many, many songs; but their day-to-day functioning isn't all that good and they scratch out a meager existence. I don't believe I recall the full lyrics of any song.

Then, there are autistic people. Phenomenal in some areas (requiring great memory to some degree) and not so much in other areas of life. Maybe those are areas of no interest to them?

Yes, the human brain is tremendously complex as is a person's personality. The soul is somewhere in there too.

Me? I recall so many things beginning around age 2 years it can be distracting.

The brain is a mystery.

I still have dreams about standing in front of my locker either naked or in my tightie whities trying to remember my combination! I am told it means that for whatever reason my life is out of my control.

Can offer you some help. You’ll need to go back to your old locker, naked, during a class change, to try to open it. You know, it’s living or re-living the actual experience to get over it. I have confidence that when you do this, your old nightmares will go away…just that you likely will have a new one.

I'm afraid this may cause a whole new set
of nightmares....not just 1....
