My son is 16.He wanting to find 68-69 Coronet.I want to find something that is not a basket case.He thinks it would be COOL having a basket case, learning to weld, wiring, upholstry, bodywork. We are setup at the swapmeet tomorrow in columbus ohio.I plan on walking him around & pricing out the materials to put a car back together. He has his own $.but he is very tight with his $$. AMD has their roadrunner there for display purposes showing alltheir sheetmetal replacement parts.I do not know if that display will help my argument. If anybody here is going please stop by and help me plead my case.My neighborhood would thank you.

You've got to appreciate his desire to learn;NURTURE that! However...have him talk to some old-timers about what a mental drain a project can be-especially a basket case project. If you've got the patience,it's one thing;if not blessed with the virtue of patience, the frustrations can lead to the infamous "Started Project For Sale" ad in the classifieds.

Show your son some of the restoration threads here and when he sees how long it takes he might change his mind. But I can say it is a great bonding experience that you both will never forget.

I remember what its like being 16,you lose interest real quick.1st car should maybe be a a driver that needs some work that can be done and still drive it.

Its nice he wants to learn.I wished I would had a complete car for reference purposes my first time.To many people will sell you the wrong parts. Then again hunting&swapping can be a blast. Its a special time for you two,do it your way&enjoy!I'm doing another& wish my Dad was here.

I'm moving back home following completion of my Masters program at university to build a car. (Hopefully a 70 B Body if I can find one) As much as I'd love to build up a basket case, I have a time/space/tools/knowledge problem. First off, the parents are only letting me move home and occupy the garage for a certain length of time, then I'm OUT. Second, I only have access to essentially 1 garage and a couple of sheds for storage. Third, I don't have the tools necessary to do all of the body work a basket case would need, nor do I have the money to purchase all the tools. And finally, I just don't have the knowledge to build a basket case, at least not yet. And with a lack of knowledge comes added time, which brings me full circle to my first problem.
What I'm trying to get at, is as a 20 something car fan, your son might get a lot more enjoyment and use out of a rough driver that he has to fix up, as opposed to a heap that's going to sit in the garage all through high school. Even a driver can require learning to weld, wire, upholstery and bodywork.

Good luck either way!

OK, I don't know how much of this is rumor, and I've avoided checking it out cause I can't afford to get another car and do it too.

About 3 blocks from me is an untouched 68 R/T or Bee that I've kept track of for about 20 years now. Everytime I've talked to him, he's said he was going to fix it up. About 2 months ago, I heard he had been involved in a drug deal gone bad and was now willing to sell the car. It looks complete, but I don't know if it still runs or not. I'm about 2 1/2 hrs due south of you, and if you're interested, I'll cruise by in the next week or so and see just how much of that story is true, and if the car is still sitting there. B-5 blue, black top

Sounds like it's worth checking out.

The other side of the coin is the 16 yr old has - or should have - plenty of motivation and time on his hands to tackle a project. Once we get older, and have real life issues like work getting in the way, big projects seem more difficult. Even though we know more and have more money as we get older making the time seems more difficult. That said I wouldn't have him jump in to a Donny project, but something that needs mechanical work as a result of sitting for 20 yrs would be perfect.

Depending on his budget, I have seen a lot of great cars for sale on the net lately that would make great entry level project cars that can also be driven during the process.
Take it from someone that has 2 "basket cases" to work on and nothing of my own to drive.

Well,I told him he needs to build a large shed out in the backyard for his lawnmower repair business(it is now located in one side of my 2 car garage). He has settled on a drive while restore(fix-up) project.I showed him alot of my receipts from over the years. He does not want #s matching show car.We have been finding deals all over the place.I told him 1st come grades and need to get his shed up.Kid makes good $$ fixin, swappin, scrappin, lawnmowers, tractors, especially snow blowers this feb.

Your a lucky Dad.Are you guys going to Indy 3/6-7/10?That would be a good swap/show I have seen some good cars ther over the years.Did you check out 66 Coronet on 4sale forum by moparsteve636?4 spd car, price seems reasonable. And when he's with he can give it to you!LOL

Should pick that up for a decent price. Cool thing about a 500 is that is has almost all the same trim as a R/T. (center console, buckets, rear lights)

Definitely want a running car for his first. End up losing interest, and you end up with a bunch of car parts and a big oil stain taking up your garage.

Hope he got a bunch of money stashed away. Nothing is cheap when it comes to an old MOPAR.
