!st start up - PLEASE HELP

You'll need to prime the oil & fuel systems.Set the rotor to #1 and yell FIRE in the hole before you turn the key!!Have the timing light hooked up before start up.What type of lifters are you using??

The best way I have found is to have the distibutor and drive out, insert a long hex into the pump and use a drill to turn the pump. While doing this move the crank so TDC mark is at about 10:00 and 2:00, this will line up the oil holes in the cam journal to pump oil up and into the rocker shafts. I usually do it with the valve covers off to here the squirt noise as you turn the crank. When you get to that spot leave it there until you see oil coming out of the rockers. This is best when you have hydraulic lifters.

Now I have another question. (I am new to mopars) My dist. has no gear on it and a flat blade at bottom. That tells me the dist runs off of the pump and the pump runs off of cam? If thats the case, how do I turn the oil pump with a drill?

Now I know you have a Big Block. What you see is the distributor pump drive, take a slotted screwdriver and at will spiral up and out. On the bottom is a hex that goes into the pump. When you reinstall have the #1 cylinder at TDC on the firing (compression) stroke then spiral back into place with the slot parallel (in line) with the crankshaft center line. Aim your distributor at the fuel pump, like 8:00 if you were looking down at it standing in front of the engine and you should be very close. Taking the cap and lining up by eye with a mark will get you closer if you know what I mean.
Oh forgot, turn drill counter-clockwise. Smallblock clock-wise.

That cleared it up. We got everything ready yesterday, oil up, fuel up, and were just about ready to start it and a damn t-storm blew in. Knocked out our electricity and all. Maybe today......

Waiting like an expectant father for the birth. Keep us posted.

When starting,if it farts out the exhaust the timing is retarded. If it pops a little out the carb,it's advanced. If you feel everything is where it should be or at least real close and you get flames out the carb, the distributor is 180* out,ask me how I know:icon_eyes::icon_tongue:

It started! We had it running for about 10 seconds and noticed a small fuel spray at the line and shut it down. I got a video and will post. It sounds AWESOME.
It seems I can't post a video......

Attaboy, Attaboy, and how about an Attaboy. Nothing to it eh!

Sorry about lack of video, no reply to problem from site.
Started again today, got timing in ballpark. Extremely rich. 870 Holley with
78's up front. Any ideas? Stock heads, fairly rowdy cam, Ed rpm intake.
10-1 comp. We are talking can't freakin breath rich. Sounds awesome tho.
I thinkin jump down to 74's, 72's?
Floats and all looked right.
Jerry

Probably goes without saying but--be sure to prime the oil pump!!!
