My car has a msd6a ignition with a start and step control box on there.
Do i need it?
I only drive it on the street?
From what i read its for street/strip?
Can i just the msd6a ignition, or is the start and step an upgrade?

Interesting.... I'd never heard of a "start and step" before

On a street car you don't need it. It looks like the "start & step" has two timing retards. One is when the engine is starting & the second retard is activated by a 12V signal to a pink wire. If that part of it is hooked up, there should be some type of "trigger" switch in the car (nitrous, high-gear, etc.).....some type of non-factory switch hooked to it.

This would be useful for a car that needs a ton of initial timing to stay running....like a car with a huge cam.... and has its initial timing set at 30+ degrees and the mechanical advance locked out. The "start & step" could pull out some timing so you could even start the car & the "step" part might pull out a few degrees timing in high gear to improve top end OR pull some timing when the nitrous kicks in at the track.

So im guessing the previous owner was running nitrous. Pink cable was long and tucked under the dash.
How do i tell if hes locked the distributor out?
Its doesnt have the vacuum advance on the side of it.
