Hello,

Did a 500ci B block build. The only thing left from the original motor is the block. Roller cam with hyd roller lifters, roller rockers and 440 source stealth heads.

Got it to fire up and run for about a minute and it stalled out.

(Rebuilt Holley 800 DF/DP running on electric fuel pump. Had to do some float adjustment because fuel was pouring into the secondaries.)

Now it will fire but, wont stay running and it backfires through the carb.

INITIALLY I had the timing set at TDC and moved the distributor back and forth until it started.

Backfiring through the carb should be a timing issue. I’m 99.9% certain my initial timing with the distributor and cam gear are correct.

A quick question and I’m open to advice

What direction do I rotate the distributor to advance and retard the timing?

Thank you

Backfire through the carb is usually due to retarded timing. I would start with my initial timing about 12-16 deg. BTDC and go from there. 440'

Clean off your marks on your balancer and get yourself a simple timing light.

Backfiring could also be a lean condition- like a restriction in the carb

If fuel was dumping into the secondaries until it died you may have already fouled the plugs

If you want to advance the timing turn the distributor in the opposite direction that it rotates when cranking. And the opposite for retarding the timing.

All big block Mopar distributors rotate counter clockwise so to advance timing, rotate clockwise. I have a 440 Source 496 w Stealth heads and hydraulic roller cam, it likes 16° initial advance.

I’m just trying to get it to start again.

Took the valve covers off and re confirmed my “static” timing and #1 under the cap.

Everything looks legit under both valve covers

Ill start at zero and see how this goes

Thank you

Fired right up.

A little timing adjustment and it runs pretty good.
