I am ready to first fire my 1978 440 engine with the stock starter. My vision is not good enough to read a the wireing diagram and not finding what I need in a google search ( not good at searching)
I temporarily want to use the bare minimum to get it started. The starter has , I think, the main battery cable stud and another smaller stud? what feeds the smaller stud? Do I need a starter relay?
I will run a jumper wire from a 12 volt source to the coil for power to the ignition points. Not using a ballast resister for the no resister needed coil . I will use a remote starter button--what do I connect its two leads to?
I wish I could find a starter wireing schematic that was large enough for me to read. Thanks for any help............................MO

When is all said and done, yes you will need a starter relay, it will feed the smaller stud on the starter. For now you can run your jumper to the + of the coil for the ignition. The remote starter button, one lead to +12 volts, probably the battery, the other lead to the small stud on the starter. That should get you cranking.

Thank you, see if I got this right-----battery cable from positive post to large stud on starter relay---another cable from the other post on the starter relay down to the large post on the starter....A wire from the smaller stud on the relay to the smaller stud on the starter?...........................MO.

I want to wire this today, any confirmation on my question? Thanks for any help..............................MO

In a word: No. Try this:
1) Battery cable negative to engine block.
2) Battery cable positive to the large stud on the starter solenoid
3) #8 to #10 gauge wire from the large terminal on the solenoid (same as above) to the large (B) terminal on the starter relay
4) #10 to #12 gauge wire from the small terminal on the starter solenoid to the small terminal (sol) on the starter relay (closest to the large terminal)
5) Hook your remote starter up to the large terminal on the starter relay (B) and the small terminal next to it (sol)
6) Connect a wire (#12 to #14 gauge) from the coil positive to the Battery positive terminal

The motor will start and run if everything else it right. You might want to put a switch in the last wire (coil to battery) if you want to turn it off...
