Hi Guys!
I am having a problem .Helping a friend here put a 440 in his RR.Changing just about everything being it had a 383 stock exhaust . Car has 10.5 flywheel ,its a used scatter shield so I can only assume its a Lakewood, and he has the summit mini starter. Well the problem is I cant rotate the starter enough to come close to the flywheel without the starter wanting to hit the block..Is that common with these summit starters?Does that mean we have to change starters? If so which starter do you guys recommend? Thanks

My Coronet R/T has a 440 with 727 and TTI 2" headers. I used a reman starter from NAPA for a 1998 RAM 1500 5.9 liter.

In the automatic trans bell housing, there is a small hole that the end of the starter goes into. This helps hold it in the right position/ alignment to contact the flywheel properly. The stock 4 speed bell housing prob has the same thing. Does your scatter shield have that hole in it? For the starter end? They can only go in at 1 position.

Does that scatter shield accomadate different diameter flywheels? I think the stock one is 11" ?

Post a picture of the starter nose end. You may have to reclock the nose to get it to fit, sometimes necessary on aftermarket mini starters.

I took the shield down and the starterlooks like it would work it lines up with the holes, but the starterhits the bottom of the block.I took a picture .It hits the block right underthe starter. The nose doen't touch the inside of the scattershield.

I ot a powermaster 9523.That did it.I just needed an adjustable starter! Thanks anyways

Right now I am in the process fitting up my own starter to a Lakewood bell housing and don't seem to have a problem. I ran this same bell housing back in the 80's with a 10.5" clutch and flywheel so I know it works. And my Lakewood does have a pilot hole for the starter but I had to cut the section out of the block plate where the starter goes to allow the starter pilot to engage the hole. The electrical connector of the mini starter does come really close to the block but I will see soon enough if I have to make mods.

I had to order the Lakewood starter adapter part number 15905 to make it fit.Lakewood says you need this adapter for a 130th flywheel to fit with there 15330 scattershield!
