steering gear box

It's sometimes hard to tell from pictures but a bit of backstory might help a lot...was the car assembled and driving when you bought it? Have you removed the steering box yourself and are now having trouble getting it back, or was it like that when you bought it? Are you replacing the steering box that came with the car? Are all 3 mounting bolts in and snugged up when the box is in this unaligned position?

The car was assembled and driving when I bought it but I was just driving it for a couple of weeks before I started to take it apart...
During dismantling I discovered this problem. I will most likely buy another steering gear box when I'm going to put the car together (think I will go for no power stear).
Yes, all three bolts are installed when the steering box is in this unaligned position (maybe on some of the pictures just one bolt is installed but the problem remains with all bolts in position).

Isn't there supposed to be ANY angle between the steering gear box and the steering wheel shaft?
If there is an angle, how big is it??

The steering box and steering column are meant to be in line, and the whole assembly is angled slightly outwards from the engine bay to the interior of the car. Yours looks like it's angled too much, on mine the closest the steering box gets to the shock mount is about 1/2". The photo below was mine before disassembly, the gap looks smaller because of the camera angle. You would know the alignment is correct when the steering column comes through the centre of the circular housing in the firewall - from one of your pics the column seems to be hard up against the side of the firewall housing which isn't right. There is a plastic seal that slides up the column and clips over this housing at the firewall, which it can only do if it's centered. Maybe as an experiment could you try some washers between the steering box and one of the k-frame mounts, just to get it aligned and see how much everything is out? Good luck buddy!
