What size is the roll pin that holds the steering column to the gear box?
I can not get it out. Have tried penetrating oil and tapping it out but it will only come about 1/4 of the way out.
tried drilling it out but just keep breaking drill bits. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You don’t happen to know what size I need do you?
I’m going to the store to buy one.

Not off hand, look in the coupling hole to verify that step is the issue. I'd just grind the punch you were using down a touch. Easiest way to check size would be turn the steering 180 and compare the punch to the split pin coming out the other side.

The pin is a 5/16". Sometimes they are really stuck in there. Hope you didn't do any damage with the drill...

..ahh you mean 3/16 Joel...

The roll pin that goes through the coupling body holding it to the steering box splined shaft? It is 5/16". Thought that was what we were taking about, but maybe not?

I don't remember it being that big, that steering shaft to shoe pin yes, but I don't think that roll pin is 5/16...maybe a 1/4..maybe you're correct. All I know is it's blowing 90K here and sleet, so I'm not leaving my comfy chair to go check.. LOL The hole does have a bit of a lead in/step to it though and figure the OP's punch was bottoming on it.

5 degrees here, but I had to walk over to the garage to take a pic for you. It is 5/16".

The taper is news to me... but this picture shows the "step" (counterbore) I mentioned. Why he's getting it a 1/4 of the way out and then not able to drive it any further as his punch is bottoming in the step.

The hole is not tapered. He’s not using the proper size punch.

Old thread revival; did you ever determine what size punch and did you ever get the coupler off?

I got the right size bolt (don’t remember the size) ground the threads off to center it in the roll pin. basically a home made stepped punch. Kinda surprised me how well it works. That thing is still kicking around in a tool box somewhere.

FWIW the pin it 5/16 but I use a 1/4" punch to drive it out... In fact back when I was doing a lot of wrecking yard scavenging I routinely used the air cleaner stud as a punch to drive out the roll pin... If you aren't sure what size it is the air cleaner stud is 1/4--20......

I kinda though I used a 1/4 grade 8 bolt.

Dang I was hoping we could get two pages on how to remove a roll pin LOL:rolleyes::p
