So I have been tossing around adding a carbon canister to the vent lines on my 69 RR. Seems no matter what there is just always going to be a gas smell in the garage after trip out and about. Wondering if there would be any adverse effect on the venting?

My 67 Satellite always smells up the garage for a day or 2 after a drive. I believe it is coming from the fuel in the carb evaporating from the bowl vents. I have seen a tube looping over and hooking the bowl vents together, on some carbs. This might help. May need a small vent hole in it though. Or remove it when driving. Let us know if this works.

Off road carbs have a tube connecting them because severe angles in driving offroad may cause the fuel to spill over. however the tube has holes in it to allow expansion of gases and the fuel to spill into the carb. if you cap the vents off, you may build up pressure in the bowls which could be bad. Maybe let the car cool off outside the garage before parking it.

How old is your gas cap? Is the rubber warn out? If so I would replace it. I drive my car all the time and park it in the garage with no gas smell.

The gas smell is from the float bowl vents as stated. And if you think you have it bad try driving a dual quad hemi around in the 80 deg weather!! I can probably fill the tank in a Toyota if I were to condense all that vapor. I have thought about adding a canister as well but I don't think it will work. Even if you tie the vents to it there are the venturis sitting open. Plus the canister should have a purge hooked up, etc.. The only way to fully solve the vapor problem is to go with EFI, run race gas or somehow try and keep the carb cool.

Mine doesn't smell anymore after a day or 2. I assume it is the more volatile vapors in the fuel evaporating from the hot carb. A single or dual snorkel air filter should help the smell prob, but would be restrictive to air flow. My old 66 Chevy Bicayne had a very small single snorkel air filter on top of the 283 2 bbl. You couldn't hear a thing when you stepped on the gas. No fun at all! Lol

Here is the inside of my tank, the vent tube on the right was connected to the short vent tube outside which didn't make any sense when parked down hill with a full tank. Left one tied to the long tube through the trunk, I have switched these which has helped out some, now I have a filter on the long tube. it helps and has cut sown the smell dramatically most likely like you guys have said bowl vents. Even that is subdued by the factory un silenced air cleaner.

Wondering if the tubes in this tank are backwards, it was changed some time in the early 90's

My cap is a year or two old so rubber is good it is a non vented cap, I will look a t a replacement this weekend just for the hell of it maybe that it? don't hear any gurgling though.

Always wondered why there were 2 vent tubes. I know 1 is at the top of the tank on the inside. This is to vent vapor to the outside. It ends up at the top of the wheel well I believe. The other one extends down to the bottom of the tank. Then it ends up venting near the top of the tank? After going up, over, then it points down at the end. I suppose they both allow air into the tank as fuel is pumped into the carb. I heard mine gurgling before, after a hard run. Turns out the vent tube was plugged, so the air was going in thru the submerged tube, causing a gurgling sound. Guess thats why there are 2 tubes.

And yes, it looks as if the factory unsilenced air cleaner would cut down on evaporation from the top of the carb, as opposed to an open element type.
