Ok heres the deal and maybe someone will explain to me how I can get it taken care of. 5 years ago I purchased a rolling shell of a '73 Satellite. It has been sitting in my fathers yard since then. I purhcased it from a guy for $150 with no drivetrain and no title, he gave me a handwritten bill-of-sale. Anyways, right after I bought it, I was shipped off to Japan for 4 years and now I am living in New York. I am heading down to Texas on May 21st to pick the car up and bring it back to NY. I need to get it titled into my name I think before I can bring it to NY. So does anyone know how I can go about getting this thing into my name between now and May 21st when all I have is a bill-of-sale which may or may not be from the actual owner? Its just a rolling chassis with no engine/tranny/or rear axle and the interior is gutted. I just bought it for the rust free/straight body.

Snowball's chance. What the bill of sale can get you down here is a BONDED title, IF the car isn't stolen. For the bonded title, you will need an appraisal on the car, and you will have to buy an insurance bond for that value. You will never see that money again. It is held by the bonding company for when, or if someone else pops up and claims ownership. They THEY will collect that money. God only knows what happens to that bonded title when you try to transfer it to another state.

This is all based on what I've been told by the lady at the courthouse.

Getting a title is the about the same in the state of Ga., but then again, we dont have to have a title on a car 25 years old or older, just a bill of sale, Hell, I've gotten them hand written on Waffle House napkins before and they took it. True story.

Also, there is a statute of limitations as far as how long a person has to claim a car as "stolen". Here, it's 12 months.

But to obtain a title on a bond, we have to call the police dpt out to fill out a V.I.N verification form, where they call the vin number of the car into dispatch to make sure it isnt stolen, and of course the 100.00 fee to the bond lawyer then they fill out this form and you just take it to the tax office to get your paperwork and tag.

I would do some research and see how it works in your state, being texas, it may very well be kinda the same sort of deal.

I dunno. Maybe it's just me, but requiring a title on an non stolen car
that is over 25 years old is kinda like a casheir at the 7-11 mking sure your money has the official reich stamp on it...............

Well, I know it isnt stolen as I have already had a state trooper verify the vin through his system. I did that before I bought it.

Anyone ever tried www.broadwaytitle.com before?

contact a title service here. for a hundred bucks they,ll get you a title

Check with NY Motor Vehicles. NY doesn't use titles on old vehicles. That bill of sale might be enough to get it legal there. Might be easier than dealing with TX.
I use www.its-titles.com when I need one.

Does anyone know what you need to do if you have a clear title but it isn't signed over to You? I am building a Little red and have the title but it has changed hands a couple of times since it was signed by the original owner. In other words it is not signed over to me.

You will need a bonded title.

You NEED to contact that owner, since it's still in his name, and have him apply for a duplicate title (lost title, in some states). HE is the ONLY person who can do this! If he is dead, you'll need to have his estate take care of that through his executor. The only way a person can apply for a lost or duplicate title is if that vehicle is in THAT person's name. Period, dot.

You are holding the title and need to do the transfer, right? You could try and find the person that is listed on the face of the title for starters. Is the title at least signed on the front?
