The 396 and 440 Hemi

My bet is that they would have actually been 400 and 444.

The 400 did actually get built just not a ball stud.

...and put a 440 stroke crank in a 400 and you get 444.
The complete story to include all the designs and decisions to include 396 and 440 was in the 1996 November Poular Hot Rodding. Sure wish they would have made the engines.

I thought it was going to have a slightly larger bore than the 440, hence the size increase. Chrysler already had two versions of the 318 and two different 426 engines in the 60's, do you think it mattered to them enough to call a 440 something else to avoid confusion?

Some good old magazine scans with Dick Landy...

The complete story on these engines was in the Popular Hot Rodding Novenber 1996. It shows everything about the design, reasons for the engines, and decisions made. Yes 396 and 440. Please see the story. I sure would have loved them to actually be produced. Thanks for the conversation.

View attachment 924906 Yes, Mopar Action covered it. In fact, the first Mopar magazine I bought in 1987 had an article about it. Basically, Chrysler was going to make a big block Chevy.
I do not have that Mag but I do have Popular Hot Rodding, November 1996 Issue 36 that has the complete history, dimensions, break down, reasons and the end result. I was in Germany and was really happy about it but it died. Thanks for your information.

At the time I read some of the articles on the Ball Stud Hemi, the best I remember there is only one running example. I'm not sure what it's in.

The only one i think i remember was Dick Landy had one in a 69 Barracuda that did run. I did see one on ebay a few years ago. Did not have the money at that time.

Actually the running Ball Stud Hemi is installed in Larry Sheppard’s old ‘69 440 ‘cuda which is in a museum somewhere in the mid-west.

I don't know who owns it now, it may be Sheppard, but in 2006 it was owned by Tom Hoover and installed in his Cuda. I don't recall for sure, but I believe it was a '69 cuda. I personally took this photo of the engine compartment of the Cuda at the 2006 Chryslers at Carlisle show where it was displayed at the time. Of course, Mr. Hoover has passed on now and I don't know who ended up with his car. I only wish I had taken more photos of the entire car and engine, but I only took this one shot.

The car with the engine installed is also in a magazine.

I want to say a late 1990's or early 2000's edition.

Thanks for setting me straight. It was Tom Hoover’s car. When I wrote this I knew it was either Sheppard’s or Hoover’s car and I should have checked first before I posted. Tom and I talked years ago at a car show about my M Code ‘cuda Notchback and he told me that he had one also.

Has any one seen these two Hemi engines? Late 60s, Chrysler was testing two new Hemi engines with the intent of replacing all Big Blocks. The trouble was the new emission rules were coming out and it would cost to much to get them to pass, so they died. But there are a couple out there. Look it up, Chrysler Ball Stud Hemi, or Chrysler mystery hemi.

Well, I doubt there are very many of those anywhere. It could very likely be Tom Hoover's old car. Is it B5 blue like in the photos? Engine look similar? Get us some details and report back please. Thanks.

Or I was told that's what it was?
Since I have heard that there is only one running example and it's in Tom Hoover's 69 Barracuda per magazine articles, please show us. It could very well be that car you are referring to. Other examples of the Ball Stud Hemi are incomplete with no parts to make into running engines. So help us all out and let us in on the details. :xscuseless:

Heres the article from Hot Rod March 1986.

Chrysler used to have a little Ball Stud Hemi display set-up, including a complete engine, at the WPC museum. Saw it a couple times. And yes the only running example was in Hoover:s Barracuda, but I am pretty sure the engine was actually owned by a different well known Chrysler guy, but I can't remember his name right now.
