I’m watching a WWII documentary again. It reminded me of a time me and some friends were riding motorcycles in Asheville NC area.
There were maybe 8-10 of us waiting to be seated at a Resturant. We’re sitting outside drinking beers.
My friend taps me on my shoulder and says, hey, look at that guy, he was in WWII. It was an old man being helped out of the Resturant by his son and wife. He had his military ball cap on with scrambled eggs on the bill.
Both of my grandfathers were in the navy WWII. They never talked about.
I’m a history buff. I am always overwhelmed what the greatest generation did and how much we owe them.
They were a generation of shitheads like us that got called upon to change the world.
THEY CERTAINLY DID THAT ! It was a war we were staying out of. Somebody else’s problem. We’re good.
Calling them the greatest generation is an understatement
Long story short. I got up and said, look, it’s the greatest generation! All my friends got up and we applauded.
The old man was confused. His son leaned over and said something to him in his ear.
He smiled and waved at us.
I wish I could have done this for my grandfathers. I get goose bumps every time I think of this moment.
The look on his son’s face as he waved a thank you will stay with me forever.
All these cars and our great lives we enjoy is because of their stepping up when called upon. They are total bad asses from our greatest generation.
I am eternally gratefully for their sacrifices
