Remember having to type c: to open a file?
Way back in the Windows 3.1 days when I chose my first computer as a graduation gift, having the option of a Mac or Windows, I went with Windows because of "all the games you could play". There were very few games for Macs. Anyway, who remembers having to edit their autoexec.bat and config.ini files to get as much of that 640 KB of RAM as possible available for games? Maybe adding in some lines for your Soundblaster soundcard to function properly?

...and knowing what blocks of that lower memory range certain cards liked to use, so you could exclude those (in hex) for use by other programs.

I remember the 640 KB ram...I had an Atari ST and upgraded the 512 KB to 2.5 mb, for $70. The PC guys were amazed at how much memory I had. And that I had a wireless mouse in 1991 as well. I used to spend hours every night on the local bulletin boards back then.
