The Original Hemi Charger Is On a Hot Streak

All of the original Street Hemis in 66 were 4-speeds. At introduction in Jan66 MoPar did not yet have the Tor-Flite beefed up enough for the Hemi.
I am not sure when the autos were available, maybe late April.
I do know, Back in early Feb66 I ordered a 66 Hemi Charger w/auto. In early May there was still no production date for my car. Since I was moving, I canceled the order. The dealership changed the order to a 383, and got a production date the next day.
So Torque-Flite was not ‘standard’ on the Hemis in 66.

Dealer salesman often don’t know what to do with special cars. And they make stuff up to tell customers when they don’t understand.

I thought there were 66 Hemi HP2 early with auto. I’ve never heard 4spd only on early cars.

Yes the auto was optional and 4spd standard. Was for every street Hemi 66-71.

Late April sounds off to me also. I’m pretty sure there are 66 Hemis with TF built before then. I think the pre-production cars were built with TF. The infamous road test with the Hemi convertible cresting a hill with all 4 tires in the air was an auto. You can tell it’s early - look at the radiator in the attached story.

I owned an HP2 Satellite back in 66. They were the very first production run. Since there were only about 53 HP2 cars built, I would say they were all 4-speeds.

Now, where is that article about the “Bloomington Ghost”, reported to be the first Hemi Charger built. Owned by a little old lady named Cora Case, it was driven the first year she got it, and then she received a company van and put the car away….for like 40 years. Brought back to the road by her TV repair man, Galen called it the most original surviving Hemi car in existence. Great story, beautiful car, in the ugly Mauve color from 66. It’s a great story!

Just ran across the picture of Big Red beside the ghost in Aurora Missouri. That's Keith. I guess it would have been up in the mezzanine of the dealership for about 27 years

That was a TDC show. At Aurora where we first met Keith.
We had our 67 440 auto pulling a crank up camper trailer.
When we went to the 30th Anniversary show in Bloomington, Keith kept our 67 LL1 383 auto for us while we took the Amtrak into Chicago where we enjoyed the Blues scene. Some very good music and memories.
Also there was a road trip done on old 66. Keith’s so Ben took a lot of pictures. I mentioned that somewhere don’t know if it was on this site. The night before the meet I hit a deer near Madison Wi. Had to slice its throat. Couldn’t open the passenger door for the rest of the trip. So the wife had to climb over the console to get in and out.
To top it off, that was the first road run after paint and body. That car was original when we got it.

Got any pictures of the 440 magnum car?
