They just totalled my office chair (Whats wrong with these people?)

I wasn't kidding, the chair is our best one so I can't complain about that!

I've done some leather reconditioning on a couple cars; but once the leather has cracked apart there's no reversing this unless new leather. I've used a few products that make it look nicer; basically camouflaging the wear to some extent. But having the chair for decades, as you've indicated, sure sounds like you got your money's worth. There is a wealth of ergonomic chairs to be had for much less than what you've described. I've bought a new desk chair about every five or so years for a few hundred dollars and each time it has seemed there are new ergo features. The one I have now adjusts in numerous ways. To each their own; but I couldn't fork out several grand for a chair...seems you'd have to make an effort to spend that much. If you're mechanically inclined (pun intended) there are likely ways you could do some fixing if you find worn shafts, bushings, or washers, etc. I did this on one of my chairs a few years ago that extended its life...but after the hassle just didn't seem worth the effort to me the next go around.

Thanks Kiwi, I hadn't seen that skit in more than 10 years. It was great! Thanks!

Well unfortunately the first owner who had the chair multiple decades got it's money's worth. :D
I just had it a couple years.

It was fine when i bought it but i suspect it got used pretty heavily at some point in the past 40 years.
Maybe exposed to sun a lot and probably not taken care of the leather with protective products. (Or used products that did more harm than good)

The leather looked good when i bought it and i did not expose it to sun or anything which could have caused these cracks. (That i know of)
So the only explanation i have is the previous owner maybe did not take good care of it.

Well i took a gamble. Instead of buying a new chair for 6 grand (herman miller for example gives 12 years warranty on these) i was being smart and bought a used one for 1,5 grand instead.
Unfortunately did not worked out as good as i thought it would.

I mean the chair is ~40 years old so its not really a surprise that the mechanicals are worn out.
I just did not expect the leather to break so fast as it still looked good when i bought it...

Anyway i posted a classified locally looking for good, used replacement parts. Maybe someone got what i need...
Otherwise there is a guy that repaired the seats in 2 of my cars before and did a pretty good job. Might call him.
I mean this wont be perfect but i just want to stop the chair from falling apart... (And this would be an affordable solution)

An example of what this guy can do (Not my car)

Cheap chairs these days are designed to hold up until the warranty is over and then fall apart. Happened to me multiple times...
Its not worth fixing them. I tried it with the first one and shortly after the next thing on it broke. Replacement parts? Sorry pal, just buy a new one!

I get expensive chairs if your at your desk alot! $1500 I can see but $6000 no way .
I wouldn't total it just yet that's easy upholstery work . And I'm sure repair work would be easy enough .

As I sit here reading this in my antique Captains chair that I trashed picked some 35+ years ago. All I changed was the pedestal & wheels, and I made my own cushion! They just don't make 'em like this anymore!!!

I got that same dang chair!!! I bought mine for $50 awhile back found the date under it 1896
I need to fix my spinner but it works great and is very comfy ! I was going to strip it and give it a new coat of stain !

I'm using it a lot and it is VERY comfortable. If it now also had a life span of at least 10 years i would say yes its worth it.
Of course 6 grand for a new one is just insane. :screwy:

Actually that's 6k EUR which equals to 7k USD for the Vitra one sold in germany. But the Herman Miller one sold in the united states is "just" (yes i know) 5k USD.
They have always been expensive but if i recall right the herman miller one was more like 3k USD half a decade ago... So another great example of greed and inflation right there... :mob:

BUT: I appreciate it when companys go up with the price RATHER then going down with the quality. (Though, they probably do both :()

I'm not totalling it yet. As i said above right now i posted a classified ad locally looking for used parts.
If that does not work out i call a guy who already fixed the leather seats from 2 of my cars.
I try to avoid reupholstering as i think that would be pretty expensive, wouldn't it?

I got that same dang chair!!! ... it is very comfy !

Hard to believe since the seating surface is made out of WOOD ???

Before i bought my chair i tried out one of these "ergonomic chairs" because i thought that would be healthy and everything...

After a few days everything hurt.

Maybe i did something wrong or this chair sucked but i prefer my eames executive chair which was originally designed in the late 50s.
Tilt and height, thats all you got. Still the most comfortable chair which i have ever sat in my whole life.

Mine is similar to post #20, but modern mechanism made to look old.

Has built in simulated leather seat but real wood.

Pretty dang comfortable for $5 at a thrift store.

Now I need a roll top desk to go with it.

6 grand for a chair, holy crap!! I'm not sure what things cost in your neck of the woods but around here 6 grand will buy a freshly rebuilt 440 motor or a new complete b body interior or a complete BDS polished 871 blower kit or new wheels and tires for 3 cars.......OR you could get 1 office chair :wtf:

Didn't Weird Al do a Styx parody song "Too Much Time On My Chair"?

From my perspective, in this day and age it's good to see a job outlast a chair!

How does an office chair thread to on for days on a car forum? It's like taking pictures of your food.

LOL, yet nobody reads the restoration threads before asking questions... just the way it goes!
