Timing at 0??

By the way, relating to your question of checking the timing chain, (entry #5), if memory serves me. Way long ago I had a 383 Challenger RT which I hammered all the time. Had around 135,000 miles on it and I put an electric fuel pump on it, blanking off the mechanical pump, after removing the lifter do-hickey in there. Anyway, it used to backfire when starting occasionally and shot a nice flame up through the carb. I don't know if the 440 is the same but, I noted that with the mechanical fuel pump removed, I could reach through the trigger slot and feel the timing chain; I think I could see it also. In my case I had about 2 inches of play in it. I think I had a chain that was partially nylon as mentioned here. They were not noted for being long lasting!

Good one, multimopes! Yeah, 383 vs 440 the same design at the pump flange, and inside.

Everyone feels your pain, and I hope you get it figured out soon. Sounds like you are going to take it to a mechanic. I had similar issues here and there, however found myself wondering why I can't educate myself and fix the usually multiple items that are wrong. It is usually a couple and when you find one you will find the other. As far as tuning I can't say enough about this article, I read it every time I do a tune up or make any kind of change. I read it as many times as it take to understand it and apply what he says, but once you do you will find you can virtually dial in your tune perfectly. http://www.mopar1.us/engine2.html

Thank you all for your support and help. I've never liked messing with timing or carburaters. And I'm always getting in over my head trying to fix too many problems at the same time instead of focusing on one at a time.

I was getting too frustrated.
Since I calmed down, I took the intake off and started from scratch. I needed a new valley pan with the heat crossover passage blocked and did not know how the outboards looked. So with new valley pan and carb rebuild kits, I will be getting it back together later today. Jegs didn't have a specific gasket at the store last night so I'm off to the warehouse so I can finish this.

Bigman, that's an awesome link. Thank you. I will be referencing that later.

Mopes, I think Im good on that issue, but I will check it the way you suggested. That seems to be an easy way to check the chain.

To everybody, I can't thank you all enough. This forum is absolutely amazing.
