Today is the 80th anniversary of Doolittle Raid

That was quite a moral boost at the time. And I wonder of they ever found out where that secret base at “Shangri-La,” was located!

I still find it amazing they were able to get fully fueled and probably lightly armed B25s off that carrier deck. Those early decks were just a little over 800 ft long and especially the first ones off didn’t have a lot of that to work with due to the aircraft staged on the deck behind them. No catapults were used either - pure engine power, carrier speed into the wind and pilot guts. Amazing.

And yet they were intentionally only using part of the available deck because between the carrier speed and the wind speed the planes took off so quickly they could have hit the tower if they lifted to quickly.....

The Japanese KNEW the attack came from a carrier, a patrol boat radioed in a sighting report. Bottom line, the attack caused such anxiety about another attack, Yamamoto decided he HAD to kill the American carriers. So they decided to attack someplace the American carriers would certainly come out to defend, so they could be sunk. So, they picked Midway.
How did that work out again......?
The Japanese Midway operation was a DIRECT result of the Doolittle raid.......

Jimmy Doolittle III was one of our ARIA pilots
Great guy, Colonel
In Martinique on TDY I asked him if being a Doolittle made it easier for him....
He said: "It closed every door in front of me"

Interesting, on the carrier launch, I think all but one ditched in China (23 out of 24?)
Jimmy was "First off the deck"
Hell of a Gutsy mission....

Part of the training for the mission involved taking off from a 500 foot runway section. The participants hadn't yet been told that the actual mission was from a carrier.

Pretty simple to figure that one out.... The said they new they were going to launch from an Aircraft Carrier, but they did NOT know what the mission was....
LIke the stories about the "Intelligence Colonel" in Roswell who got a UFO mixed up with a "weather balloon" LOL.... give these people some credit ...MOST military pilots I have met were very bright.....
