I just bought a 71 r/t charger previous owner said he left ignition on for hours. Subsequently smoking voltage regulator. He wired a toggle switch and push button starter it could be ran. Now I have no power any where. Whwere do I start

Yep, best to replace the engine harness, etc..(replace any wiring that has been cut up).....get a copy of the Mopar shop manual (not the junky universal ones) and I also suggest a copy of the colored laminated wiring diagram for your model/year of Mopar. You will need both to see how all the wiring goes together.........

Where do you start? Over. Thats where. Get rid of the crap the previous owner installed and put in oe stuff.

Hemi is so right. I got my 69' in similar condition, and one needs to assess all the wiring components as a whole. Get the color diagram.M&H makes the best harness in my opinion, so if you get a new harness go that route but if the previous owner wired around the ignition then the issue may lay in everything from bulkhead forward. First thing, look for burns at the bulkhead connectors. The fuse link, $20, can be an issue if it is still there. It sounds like it may have been wired around, but if they wired it out totally than replace it. Melted connections at the bulkhead need to be repaired fist sir.

Thank you all very much. It is a daunting task. But I beleave that its worth every bloody sweat bead

Progress is being made. Replaced harness frount to back found new gauges and will be installing soon. Rebuilding headlamp motor as soon as parts arrive.

Electronics in our rides is really the most important step in bringing and keeping them operating at their full potential. I personally feel that that is the very first place to start even before engine, tranny, brakes, etc. work is performed. Once that is straightened out then all else will fall into place. When I started my 1966 Plymouth Satellite project, the very first thing I did was gut the car and inspect the wiring. As it stood, it was serviceable but had been cut numerous times and was really quite brittle. After a complete front to rear replacement, and ops check, I was able to get it started with out those electrical Gremlins raising their ugly heads. Yes a couple of blown fuse...Old Stock...but besides that, everything works as it should....cr8crshr/Tuck

You can find all of the original OE wiring diagrams on the 71-74 charger forum. Including separate accessory and even heat/ac diagrams to include vacuum lines. They are all in the tech section and easy to find. On here you'll have to search through a bunch of posts to find them.
