I know that there is a different part number for the rubber 4 speed trans mounts, compared to the automatic and three speed, but are the crossmembers different also. I would like to put a 1968 "B" body 4 speed in my early "B" as easily and cheaply as possible.

Yes the crossmembers are different and you'll need the 62-65 version. The floor and spacing for the mounting points is way different.

They are expensive but brewers sells a reworked 4spd unit that is made from the 62-65 auto x member. I looked for an original one for months and ended up going with what brewers makes. Can't remember exactly but it's around $250 plus o need to give them the auto core.

If you don't care about originality you could have a shop custom build you one... Could be cheaper.

I think that I am going to try fabbing something up. Can you tell me how far above the crossmember that the trans mounting flange of the mount is?

Anybody have a picture of the 4 speed crossmember? Shouldn't be all that hard to revamp an automatic crossmember into a 4 speed one. FSM does not show one that I can find.

can get you a pic in a day or two.....(2.20am) here now and hve a 16hr shift in the morning.....just got home.

Have one sitting on my spare T10 box under the house.......

not the best pic, but here's a look-

HitIt comes through again. From what I can see, it looks like the basic crossmember is the same, just the very top where it is closest to the trans, is different. I wonder about the shape on the very bottom. the automatic is fairly round. I would think that the 4 speed would be flatter in order to accomidate the mount. If I knew how far above the crossmember that the trans mount is, I could easily re-engineer the automatic crossmember.

Finished the trans mount. Actually pretty easy. I used a cutoff wheel to remove the automatic trans "extension" as well as rhe flat plate on top of the crossmember. I then drilled the bottom of the mount for the one 5/16-18 trans mount bolt (1968 mount). One access hole was already in place on the bottom of the crossmember, but it did have do be increased in size to accomodate a 5/8" socket (for the trans bolts). The other side had to be drilled as there was no hole. The '68 mount works on my later model trans but the bolt spacing is closer than the early trans.
Thanks to everyone for their help and advice.

Wedgie - I found this thread from a year ago. I'm converting my /6, 3 speed to a 383 with a 4 speed. I've got a 65 Belvedere and a '68 motor and '69 A-833.
Would you happen to know the mods that would need to be made to the 3 speed crossmember, to accept the 4 spd?
