Tribute & Clone WTF is there a Difference ?? Or is there any??

This horse has been beaten repeatedly. They are both cars created by people who can't be proud of what they have so they keep the same car and change the emblems to make themselves feel better. I know I am making people angry but I just have never understood it. Why is it that if you take your coronet and put a 383 in it and upgrade the suspension, thats not cool but if you do the same thing and add Super Bee trim the car is now better? It's still the same car! I for one enjoy seeing a Satellite or Coronet done up nice rather than pretending to be another Road Runner, GTX, Super Bee or R/T.

Well said and I agree. Not every coronet needs to look like a SB. Not every Satellite needs to look like a RR.

Clone: an exact representation of something else. What most people wished they had in lieu of the real thing.

Tribute: something that has had an engine/tranny swap and striping/badges added. Something that is supposed to appear like something else. What most people really have.

I never portray it to be a "real" GTX. Anyway, most people think it is a GTO since they never heard of a GTX, (much like most people think Dusters are Novas).

I agree that I probably drive my car more because it isn't a mega dollar numbers matching restoration. I performed nearly all of the restoration work myself, and I figure that I have just over $10K into it.

Most reproduction parts companies only make new parts for the RR, SB, etc.. Ever try to buy a new Satellite hood or emblems?

Additionaly, if you watch my YouTube video, you'll have to admit that my clone car looks more original than most of today's "real" cars. I never criticize them for that.

I say to each his own and keep your criticisms to yourself. Some people are just haters.

Think of the last show/cruise that you went to. How many base models were there and not faked into something that they are not .

I respect clones but I do agree with your sentiment (for me). I've been planning on building my Belvedere into the worlds's only A12 with Belvedere emblems lol. I always liked being different and would appreciate all the a$$holes walking away from my car. That way it leaves only the people I would enjoy talking to.

I call mine a tribute because it really only has hood and wheels of an A12 - it is not a painstakjng, detailed copy, which i would call a clone. I make th distinction out of respect for the effort some put into their clones, thats all.

Tribute / Clone / wannabe = car you built the way you wanted it to be and did not care about what others think, but out of respect you make sure everyone know's it did not come from the factory that way. Bam done! Have a nice day. Good night.

Nice avatar 69coronet! I have to agree with your statement on Not ALL need to be... Your right! But i have to say if one wants them as one, then thats the way it should be i believe.. I would hate to see a young someone come hear and build his car one way when he likes the looks of the other way, Makes me a bit nauseous to think of myself or anyone else going out to jump in there ride with a thought of well, thats the way its supposed to look! which makes me think of your definition of "clone" That, i imagine, is your definition of what one is which being there is no "true written" definition that im aware of, OF a car clone. If there is and it does say this, id think it would have to be completely wrong. I cant afford just any car i want, but i did not clone my car because i could not afford a 73 RR, sorry! I did nothing more then put the stripes and the decals on a car that came to me from Virgina and was in great shape with a rally dash and budge hood ect that i slowly just started to like it the more i did to it and thought the stripes looked cooler on it then the plain color of the car that the Sebring it is.. It wasn't something i just jumped into, i looked up various pictures of the car original and the RR's, and like the RR look better, if i were ashamed or i just didn't have the troublesome "RM" and wanted one, i wouldn't be having this conversation with you because to everyone here and those i know personally, that by the way said i made the right call, it would be a "73 RR"" because thats what i would tell everyone. Please don't take this as argumentative, i don't mean it that way but you could add something to your definition of a clone: "or a car someone really likes the looks of" Lets face it, you and I will never change each others mind, they will be arguing this 30 years after you and i are gone, its part of the hobby, fun even, now im sure you can agree with that sir! lol....

I have been asking myself this question recently mainly because the term "tribute" has just come about in the resent years and "clone" has been used for many years. If I were to have any control in the matter I would say that a "tribute" vehicle is one that wasn't factory built as, say a Max Wedge, but was recreated as one using all factory correct parts just as the real deal. A "clone" would be a look alike but not with so much attention to detail. A good driver you might say..............Tribute band verses a cover band: cover bands will likely play songs from more than one group, a tribute will specialize in playing songs from one group and one group only. They will even act and dress the same as the group they are recreating. Notice any comparisons?

I beleive the post was askin a legitimate question, some people wonder what is the difference. And some people take this personal and assault anyone with a contrary viewpoint to there own. As the above poster expresses is up to the owner if they wish to personalize the car the way they wish, I always felt sorry for the guy that would walk up to a guy with a Olds Cutluss and say" too bad its not a 442 or too bad your Chevelle isnt a super sport or your sattellite isnt a Road Runner" thats the ego defining something and missing the whole point of the hobby.
I dont get it, do we really have to slam someones car or opinion. Lifes too short folks. I have had my share of "real cars and of clones or tributes and had a hell of a good time driving and playing with both. And like the poster above has seen most people dont really know or care what model it is. The car I have had the longest (19 years) is a Dodge Challenger which I get compliments on all the time, but for every one person who says "Hey nice Challenger" I have ten people that say "Hey nice Charger" I dont correct them,

We have a dealer in our area that buys and sells some classics. He said that he won't use the term "clone" in his advertising because he feels that it has a negative connotation that has developed over the years. He does use the term "tribute".

The reason is simple. Back in the 1970s, if you wanted a Super Bee you walked right past the Coronet at the dealership and you got your Super Bee. You got your Super Bee by paying Dodge to take a plain Coronet and modify it into a Super Bee. Nowadays if you want a 70's Super Bee, you can't do that. You have to either hope you can find one that you can afford and that someone is willing to sell, or if those conditions don't meet your needs, you do exactly what Mother Mopar did in the 1970s... you take a base Coronet and put the parts on it to make it a Super Bee. One car didn't become a Super Bee and another a Coronet because of divine intervention. They ended up that way because of a few check boxes on a build sheet, derived by manufacturing decisions coming from a bunch of bean counters.

You know why there were so few high-end muscle cars made? Because back in the day, most people thought it was nuts to pay extra to drop a HEMI or 440-6 in a car that they could get for a lot less with a 318 or 383 in it. Well, guess what? Nothing has really changed. If someone really wants a car, they have to get into it at a price point they can afford and mod their way up as they can afford to.

I'll make some other folks angry and say I know you think your 100% original, numbers-matching, car is special, but it's only special to you and others who think like you do. To the rest of us they're just nice cars that we think you're 100% insane to spend that kind of money on... in other words, we're exactly like the folks who would refuse to pay extra for a HEMI car from the factory when they could buy a 383 car and drop a HEMI in later for a lot less than what the factory was charging. The only difference between then and now is it's the sellers asking outrageous prices instead of the dealers, and many of us are handling this situation in the same way our parents did.

This is the part of the hobby where numbers can have a weird tyranny over clear thinking. Got a build sheet -- a sorry-*** piece of paper with magic numbers on it? Got magic numbers stamped into the drivetrain? Magic numbers on the dash and fender? And a magic alphabet character in that number that matches the decals and emblems on the body? Then all of those magical figures mean your rusted-out hulk is definitely worth tens of thousands of dollars more than the identical car in much better shape that has no broadcast sheet, mismatched numbers, and a "P" or "H" where an M needs to be.

I never was much for this kind of ideological fog, so when a partial clone came along with wheels and tires almost by themselves worth the price being asked, I jumped on it (and in it). Added the needed RR grille and a RR hood that were adventures to find and restore. And have been enjoying the hell out of my "letter H" ever since.
