Upper Cowl Issues... 65 B ? You to ?

That looked like it was gonna be a chore. I'm gonna play with the Duster a little tomorow so the cowl ison hold for now.

Here is the phone # for a guy in California that is parting out a '65 Dodge 4dr with a mint cowl and most other parts for these cars. I have bought a few things from him and so far, always as advertised:)

Sorry guys that I haven't posted cowl stuff. Had a close friend die last week. I'll be on it tomorrow.

Any B Body I get in to Media Blast I am STRONGLY going to encourage the client to either yank the cowel off, or, pay me to do it so I can media blast under it, and both sides of the cowel, check out my GTX cowel and inside over on my thread, this thread motivated me to search my GTX resto pics archives, I found some gems to share relating to this thread, bottom line; yank those cowels off!

I agree completely! I received my California cowl assembly and after several hours of drilling and chiseling, I was quite surprised at the amount of heavy surface rust in between the panels... This part was from a life long Cali car. I would put money on the fact that lots, to most of these early B-bodies have issues developing in the cowls.

Donny can you put the direct link to those pictures of the cowl shots..... would like to see them...

thanks

How big and what kind of bit did you guys use? A special bit just for drilling out spot welds? A carbide bit maybe?

I used a Blair spot weld cutter with the 3/8" cutter. Some spots required the use of a special flat end 3/8 bit with a pilot point as the Blair bit would skip across the weld.

I used the Blair as well. It was my first time ever drilling spotwelds and it may be a little expensive but it worked great. I just hit the hole with a pilot hole first and I was off to the races.

Dont freak out Stan. Yours aint that bad and here's a tip to help ya get started. I see the chalk lines you drew so all you need is a piece of thin cardboard to make a template the same design as your chalked out area. You may have to cut and tape to get the right contour but you can do it. Trace out the effected area and untape your template and trace it onto your sheet metal and cut it out, whether you use a plasma cutter or a cutting wheel. Stitch it together with your mig and place it where it goes. When you have hammered it as well as you like the fit, trace that onto the cowl and cut out the line 1/16" bigger. Fit it in and weld it up. Just stitch it about 2" apart around the perimeter then go around it again and make the spots about 1" apart. Keep that process up so as not to get any warping. Now aint that simple. Glad to help. Did i mention i like fabricating?

Thanks Small Block... I am looking forward to tackling the project...

I just want to make sure I am on the same page....

I mark the bad area on the cowl as I have and build a template out of cardboard pieces taped together to as close to the actual contours as possible.

Then I take that pattern I made with the taped pieces and release all the bends made with tape etc and lay it flat on a piece of sheet metal and cut out.

Then I assume I cut out all of the individual pieces from that main cut out and tack it to form the contours I need to match my taped pattern.

Will I have shrinkage making my new piece smaller if I have to cut pieces out of my main cut out to create my new pattern contours ? Or do you gain it back when leaving a welding gap ?

Geez I hope that makes sense

If you press your cardboard into the recesses well enough then you should have no trouble. Make sure you cut it larger than needed then cut off the excess.

I'm also in the process of repairing cowl rust on the 64, i've seen some shocking design flaws on vehicles over the years but.......who the f#*k puts a 1/2 inch lip at the edge of a cowl drain to hold the water in.:edgy:Oh i get it now......that's what the rust holes are for, what a great idea.
