Upper Cowl Issues... 65 B ? You to ?

Looks like alot of work to me.I noticed i have a hole on the inner cowl under my dash on the left side of my plymouth. i havent checked the right side yet,i may pull the dash and repair it myself.If i cut out the old metal and replace with new it will probably out last me .Thanks for sharring

I am getting back at my cowl next week.... summer is over here in the northeat so back to the garage for 6 months ! I will post as I get going.
 
Bringing this thread back from the dead;-)

Instead of reposting a million pics, here is a thread now showing a metal master reworking the damage to my cowl and inner fenderwells. And here I thought almost two years ago that my cowl was relatively clean for the age and compared to many other early B-bodies I have seen. Not so! Guys, if you have any doubt, chances are that you have some real potential problems brewing in this crap trap of a cowl design... That hood and scoop are friggin' beautiful!!! California metal, sometimes you get lucky. My car was built in los angeles and has never left the state, so I only had the trunk pan to deal with. I feel for ya guys that have all these rust issues.

Keep posting your repair work as I am facing the same thing on my 64 Polara ...
 
the things were do for the love of our cars.my 64 was the same way the trouble is there is no drainage for wen dirt a dabirs gets in there.wen I finished mine I cut a slot big enough for thing to run out after the fender was on you never seen it.water ran out good after that.just thought I would share that with you all..................Artie
 
Doug,my issue is similar to yours;just the driver's side. It's looking like your solution might work for me. I'm fortunate to know a couple of good metal shapers that could duplicate the panel. Got any pics of your fix? I've noticed some brown spots by back window as well;I'm hoping that full channel replacement is NOT in order. Lately I'm finding lots of sh!t;my mood is souring. My issue:

This is exactly what someone did to my 64 Sport Fury but when I bought in 1993 I was not experienced enough to look because the cowl was "repaired" Now Im in a position where I just may give up. I enjoy these cars but sometimes giving the car out and relying on others is not for me. This is common for the early b-body car.

i had to rework mine too i built the patches from scratch it was my first one and it is a big project to do but has to be done you can see mine on this site
 
I got the replacement pieces from Kramer.Then I figured out where to cut which I used a wafer wheel in a air grinder.I ground off the spot welds.When installig the new piece make sure you line up the wiper post and check your hood fits -tack in place and check it.The cowl panel pieces need a lot of massaging to get a good fit
 
Ok, Kramer only shows one on the website, I was curious what the other looked like.
 
This is the driver's side lower panel for reference (although it looks like the upper panel, upside down?), they do not have a picture of the driver's side upper panel on the site. I know mine has some rot, I will be finding out just how much this weekend...

Damn I feel bad for you guys having to do this cowl patch replacement. I was lucky to have a car that was built in los angeles and never left california. You all have my greatest sympathy and kudos for the brass nuggets to do this!
 
Did you make those patches or buy them?

The fellow doing the work made the patches using a shrinker/stretcher and an English wheel. The Kramer patches don't compare... If this wasn't a factory SS car, I would have gotten rid of it:icon_evil:

Mine actually looked pretty good too, aside from the spot on the driver's side. In fact, my replacement complete cowl came from Van Nuys and it looked MINT! Guess what was found when I drilled it apart? Lots of fluffy rust developing in there and pinholes that developed once wire wheeled. This was a built in LA and lifelong Cali car. The factory design was horribly flawed and just a little desert sand or debris build-up, coupled with 49 years of rain is all it takes...

My car never saw snow or salt, it is a low mile factory max wedge car, it was poorly stored though.
