Is there any way to check out their condition? They are tempting when you can get one for $400 instead of $800 to $1200 for a rebuilt one with new gears and rebuilt clutch type sure grip.

But is it worth the risk?

Besides a visual inspection of the internals and checking movement (I don't know if you are looking at single legger or SG unit), I have always take them to an acquaintance of mine at the local driveline shop to have him check them out. Good luck.

You can lok at the wear pattern on the gears, but that won't tell you anything about the condition of the sure grip unit.

checking the backlash will let you know if its set up properly. If b/l is excessive pass

It's a hit and miss on the posi fer sure...............I've just been careful to check the wear on the gears and see how it works out.

We used to change these out at the strip just playin' around with different gears..... If I get a bad one, I haven't lost much time...easy swap.

BUT, you don't have to be brainless like I was.......Have it checked out. Just cause I never got a bad one, don't mean you won't! :HappyNewYear:
