I replaced the v belt on my 72 Satellite with a good gates belt because it was squealing. I tighten as much as possible but it is still squealing. It is the belt that goes from the crank to the fan to the power steering pulleys. Has anyone else had this problem? Not sure how to keep it tight enough to not squeal. thanks

Check the inner groves for rust, it might need a quick sanding to clean it up and stop the belt from slipping. Also to get the belt at the proper tension put a ruler across the top of the belt and onto the ps and wp pulley and then use another ruler and press the center of the belt down until it measures 1/4" of deflection. (It should look like a bow and arrow set up)
If the belt still squeals try some belt dressing, you can get it at most parts stores. One old mechanic showed me to rub a bar of soap on the under side of the belt all the way around it to stop the squeal,it works quiet well.
If it still squeals I'd get up above the motor and look straight down on the pulleys to check the alignment. One pulley might me bent or need to be shimmed.

I sanded the pulleys and tightened it up again and also sprayed some belt dressing on it and it seemed to pretty much take care of the problem, but i will see if it lasts.
