I'm replacing the valley pan on my 383 when I took it off it did not have any gaskets also I have seen replacement that say (heat block off) witch dosn't have the pan cutouts like mine. What is the difference between the heat block off pan and the one I have?

What intake do you have. Factory intakes have a heat crossover passage to help warm the intake for fuel atomization improvements and such. Performance intakes usually dont. You can use different valley pans to block or not block that passageway
 
the backing gaskets(sandwich valley pan)are normally only used when you have an anluminum intake.they only use about half the torqe spec as the stock cast iron ones so the paper gaskets help to seal intake runners.
 
The one that was on the car when I got it is a aluminum holly dominator. I'll have to look because I can't remember if the intake had the openings or not.
 
felpro part# ms 90175 is for the paper backing gaskets if you are interested in taking a look at them.i use them for all the aluminum intakes i install,used or new valley pans.

Any time I am building a performance engine I always block off the heat crossover. Cooler fuel means more power plus less chance of vapor lock in the carb. That's my 2 cents
 
when i built my engine i just used valley pan n no gaskets other than valley pan. it this wright or wrong? i was even told not to use any other gaskets from machine shop. expecialy when the heads were shaved n ported.

its fine as long as you have no vacuum leaks.the paper backing gaskets just make a better seal then the steel against the aluminum.diff expantion rates of the metal can cause some leakes at upper temps,paper gaskets are designed to prevent that.
 
who make the paper ones r thy thick? i cant rember seeing them in any of my engine kits? and i ran into isues whit intake w the inake bolt not scewing in right whith the thick gaskets that came with the intaqke from edelbrock being they shaved heads

the felpros are very thin for just that reason.with a new valley pan and backing gaskets it can be tough to get them to line up.already crushed pan makes it alot easyer.i have installed new valley pans just to crush them and took it back apart to install the paper backs so i had more room.
 
I installed a felpro valley pan and gaskets, they where .075" thick (valley pan+two gaskets). The reason I know is because I had to shave .060 off the intake to make it fit and had measured the thickness. My block was milled to zero deck height and the heads needed a lot of cleaning up as well, that's why I needed to shave the intake.
