I flew into Howard AFB to report in to an assignment with the 193rd at FT Clayton. Very interesting place.

hello dodge Coronet, what year? You didn't run into a girl named Rosa at the Pan canal Bar by chance? HAHA! I had a great time there.
Except Torrijos was threatening to come across the bridge every other week. The N models were Gunships, so we flew over their posts all the Time. The La Guardia hated that. I had some good friends at Fort Kobbe, and watched the airborne guys double time up and down the street every Sunday Morning. They were some big guys! Watch it, I may tear up!

1995. Pineapple Face was gone by then but we had a butt-load of Cubans and I don't mean cigars. I was one of those guys that ran from the barracks to the back gate at Clayton every morning as a fun run. (Didn't see much fun in it though.) I tried to take a picture of the squalid Little Hollywood barrio which abuts the reservation of Howard AFB but was waned off by the Policia. I took a picture of their cop shop instead. I saw the swabbies pass through the locks a few times but they never stopped for some reason. Just as well as we didn't want the competition. Even a ugly guy like me had the dollies hanging off me when I would go night-clubbing in P.C. so I had a good time. I'm glad I went and wouldn't mind going again.

I thank you for the great pictures, it brings back memories! I Had a new 750 Honda(1972), and parked near the locks watching the ships all the time. Gen Omar Torijjos was president at that time, the father of the present president. He was killed in a so-called accident in a helicopter in 1978 or so. Manuel Noriega was a lousy Major then. I helped train the Panamanian Helicopter mechanics,
whom were more Interested in stealing than working on the helicopters. it is largely assumed Noriega had Torijjos killed.I would like to go back some day, I'm told I wouldn't recognize it, with all the new houses. I wonder What they are doing with that huge runway at Howard?

I was in the Guard from late 72 till78. I always felt i should have done more. The last draft was for those born in 1952. The lottery number you needed not to be drafted was over a 85 if i remember correctly. This was very low as they stoped sending troops to Viet Nam. Had i be born in 51 it would be a different story. My lottery came up in the low eightys so around the fall of 72 i got my letter from my Uncle Sam saying he'd appreciate a visit. At the time when you got your draft notice you had ten days to join any branch of service you wanted. I waited to the next to the last day to join the Guard. I just got a nice promotion and was dating my soon to be wife. In retrospect i was on active duty just about 6 months and another 18 and id be done. The guard was a hassle as my job had to let me attend but not pay me. Either way id like to thank you guys for your service
