I have a 440 block, cast 2-11-71, top pad is stamped G 440, 4-5, HP A, vin on pan rail is 1D259976. any Idea's what this was originaly installed in, as far as I can tell the A on the top pad is a .010 over bore from factory, Highway Patrol car or ???????

Definitely a 71 440 HP. I don't have the manual in front of me but the factory did use codes like the Maltese Cross or a diamond to indicate one crank journal is .010" under or a lifter bore is .005" over, so I suppose you are correct about the A. The curious part is the VIN. 1 being 1971 but what is a D assy plant?

In 71 the 440 HP was available in the typical B bodies or I suppose it could have come from a police car. As far as I know the 71 E bodies didn't get the 440 4 BBL, which I find a bit strange.

Here's a pic of the vin pad, cant look for other markings at this time it's stuck between two HP 2 blocks:icon_fU:

The "D" assembly plant was Belvidere, Ill. and in 1971 they were making C bodies only.
This engine could have been ordere in any C body that was ordered with the optional 440 hipo engine. Could have been a police car or anything else.

The A stamping is actually for .020 oversized cylinder bore.
