Looking at buying a 1968 RoadRunner. The trunk stamp reads G8 R289798 and the Dash VIN is RM23H8G268758...Shouldn't the last 6 numbers of the VIN(268758) match the last 6 numbers(289798) of the trunk lip stamp? There is no engine or transmission. No Fender tag.

Thanks for the help....

Eric

its possibly a repaired vehicle. Look for VIN stamp in more than one place.. If most don't match, you have to ask why? Does it look like a cut off and then welded along the inside of the trunk anywhere.?

No...there has been no repair. I am told on the 68'RR, the trunk was stamped with an order #, not the VIN #. They started stamping the VIN numbers on the trunk/body in 1969? Does that sound right to anyone?

yes it does. `68 was a shipping order only. `69 was the first year with the vin on the radiator crossover and trunk gutter, patti

same as 67..shipping order...and of course it depends on the day/mood/and condition of the guy stamping it

x2

only way to verify the Shipping Order number is with the Broadcast Sheet against the trunk lip and radiator core support numbers.

that sequential order number on the trunk lip in 68' is on the fender tag. but since it's gone, the number means nothing.

False, as monaco66coupe also stated you can also use the fender tag, if present. ...which it is clearly not in this particular case, but then again neither is the build sheet so there is no way to tell unless the paper trail of that car has already been documented years ago.

I stand corrected. :icon_mrgreen:
