Was there a fuel return line on a 440-4 R/T?

I know there is a vapor return line on my '71 charger, but the fuel line supplier sent me a return line also. Since this car came somewhat disassembled I am lost as to where the fuel line would return from and where it ends. There are no provisions on the tank. I have a car with the vapor canister in the wheel well. Thanks
 
It goes from the vapor canister on the engine to the tank pickup / return on the tank
 
The vapor canister has 3 ports.
A feed from the tank (3/8)
A return to the tank (5/16)
A supply to the carb (5/16)

It gets mounted with a tab that gets bolted under the front most fuel pump bolt.
 
I need to look at my tank again but at first glance I didn't see ant provision for it.

I now see where the fuel vapor canister mounted at the fuel pump has a line that runs back to the sending unit. The sending unit has a short nipple, alongside the supply, that serves as the return. Then a vapor line runs from the three nipple crankcase vent back to the canister in the wheel well. Somebody correct me if Im wrong. Thanks again
 
440 and 426 used this. They called it a vapor separator, which may be a misnomer. It allowed fuel in the line to the carb to drain back to the tank when the engine was shut off and the lines were heating up, avoiding vapor lock. But in reality, there was a constant bleed of fuel back to the tank whenever the pump was running.

Yes on your 71 with a 440 there is an 1/4" return line from the separator back to the sending unit in addition to the 5/16 vapor line going from the 3 nipple breather cap on the right valve cover back to the vapor tank in the left rear fender well. Then there a four vapor lines from the vapor tank to the gas tank.
 
If I'm remembering correctly, the '71 tanks had the nipples on the left side, '72s were in the middle in front.

Those are the vapor recovery ports.. Vapor travels from there to a vapor separator ( 70 & 71 upright tube just behind the right wheel well, 72 & up had a little unit mounted to the shock crossmember) then forward to either the engine crankcase (70 California only / 71 all 50 state compliant) or starting in 72 a charcoal canister... This used the 5/16" line... The intent of this vapor separator was to only send vapor not liquid fuel forward to be stored...

The system being discussed ran from the vapor separator by the fuel pump back through a 1/4" line to a nipple on the sending unit.... The intent of this separator was to send any fuel vapor along with a metered amount of fuel back to the tank.... Some of the reproduction separators have either to large on an oriface or no oriface at all to control fuel returning to the tank... If you use a repo vapor separator it's a good idea to put a 065 Holley jet in the return line where it attaches to the separator...

For the sake of accuracy, the ’71 through April 1, ’72 b-body fuel tank vapor separator/expansion tank was located in the driver’s side rear wheel well and used a tank with vent nipples exiting the driver’s side of the tank. The change to the smaller crossmember mounted vapor separator, with tank nipples at the front of the tank, took place mid-year ’72, starting with production after April 1, 1972. The tank filer neck and gas caps changed at this time as well.

Where the fuel filter mounts if this separator was equipped?
 
No true filter, a screen in the carb inlet...

I got the Shipment Sat.and the 5/16 Vapor line came as one piece.Their (inline tube) catalog shows Two pieces. Am i missing a short piece from the frame up to the Third breather Nipple ?
