What car would you buy for your kid?

I"d go with a mid 90s Dodge 1500 truck.

NO room for friends. Bad gas milage - so he won't go far. I get to use it to haul the really dirty crap with.

He can buy stuff to customize and work on it himself too.

Last year got the kid a 96' buick regal, grandmas car.100k mi on a sweet running 3.8, good fuel milage, in the 20's per gal. Fairlybig, nice ride. $1600. Had it less than a week when he swerved to miss a deer, sideswiped a tree and hit a chainlink fence pole smack in the middle of thegrill. F'in cops wouldn't let me use my AAA to tow it cause it was an accident.F'in tow company sent a reg wrecker first, then a flatbed, then a 16ton wreckerbecause they said it was stuck on the pole. They charged me $1100. for the tow.I had to pay $600 and sign the car over to them just to get his belongings andthe plates off of it. Took him a while to pay me back most of what I spent, then he was going to buy another one like it but bought a 74' dart swingerslant 6 for his dd instead.

Gotta ask though if the technology to get 40+mpg was there 25 years ago why is it so difficult now?

In terms of a car for kids I'd look for a 5-6 year old compact ( good gas mileage). Im a high school principal and unlike when I was in hs (late 80s) kids don't really view cars the same. They like technology gadgets such as ipads. Those stupid $300-$400 headphones are the rage right now. Many wont even get their DL. Those that have cars like 20+ inch wheels and loud stereos.

kids & cars

It was a different time than now, gas was cheaper, they all worked at the country club & made pretty decent money too, but my girls Rachel, Rebecca, Jessica all liked American Muscle cars & 4x4 pick ups, they are a chip off the old block, that was fine with me, Rebecca 80's Ramcharger 4x4 lifted big tires etc. {later a VW Jetta, her own money} & Rachel 85 Toyota 4x4 {Tomboy, adventurer & she still owns it too} & Jessica a nice restored 68 Camaro {drives a mini van now}, they all contributed to their 1st cars, I helped with insurance, taught them the basics, on up-keep & maintenance... The girls are all married to car guys now, go figure...LOL..but those were there cars/trucks, they got while still living with me... James the boy the oldest too, drove my old work trucks, saved his money, while he was at my house, he wanted a lowered "tuner type" Mitsubishi Turbo Convertible POS, he bought right after he went in the Navy, there's $35k wasted IMHFO, it lasted only a couple of years, pretty much fell apart, sold for a fraction of the original price... I found out recently he's now driving a "I think" it's a 97-99 Dakota V-6 2wd pick-up, lowered w/nice wheels & tires, lots of bling, engine bolt -ons, custom paint of cource... I don't hear from James much, he's deployed allot, he's young & single, going all over the world, serving his country, as a Navy officer, I don't hear from him much lately, typical boy/man....LOL..

I'd probably do what my dad did which is nothing. My first car was an 82 Camaro, no motor or trans for 600.00. He wouldn't even help me build my first motor "he said I'd learn it better by doing it myself" he was right as usual. I built the car myself and as a result I took care of it and have built several since.

I always got my fathers car when he got a new one. I just sold my Stratus to my oldest daughter for $500.
When I am ready for my next car my youngest will get my Mothers old Camray. Just like cloths; pass it on the the next in line.

My father said he would buy me a car but after seeing his ideas i pissed him off so i ended up getting a roadrunner by saving every penny. I bought my son his first car a fully built 91 240sx 2.4 twin cam [what he wanted kinda] he street raced it [apple don't fall far from the tree] blew the motor,i cosigned for a 2005 mustang he paid the payments, insurance and modded hell out of it was not satisfied traded it for a 2011 and still has it plus we are building a 73 charger for his toy!

That explains allot, right there....LOL... sorry Pabster

Don't rag on it until you've tried it. You get behind the wheel of a car that small, with that much power to weight, that handles that well, with a stick that shifts like butter, you'd have a smile on your face too. Doesn't matter what it looks like or where it was made. I'm betting you never drove a CRX, and I think you'd be surprised how much ******* fun a car like that is. Yes, Mopars are the ****. But there are plenty of other cars that are amazing in their own way...

Something with decent gas mileage. They're working minimal wage jobs or minimal hours for a decent wage, and gas pumps are the enemy of that. My son insisted on a Jeep Cherokee, found and bought one for a grand, and THEN realized that it got about 9mpg on a six-cylinder. His affection turned to hate real quick when his whole paycheck went into the tank.

wow , there was something really wrong with it. all of my 4.0 litre's have gotten 15+

Yeah, it cost a thousand bucks. That's what was wrong with it. He basically bought a working 4x4 system and some tires. :)

My dad never bought me a car but always took an interest in the ones I did buy. I did ask him one time to loan me $500 to buy a 68 GTX with a built 440 black ext/int, but he said a kid my age didn't need a car like that. That was 1977 and I was 16. My mom bought a 1974 olds 88 and I took care of that car as it was my work car. My kids all buy their own cars but I do help them work on them or help if they need to get a part for them.

if I lived in SF or any other large city, I would say take the public transit & start saving your money, for your own damn car...LOL...

In the city it's called a BMW. Bart Muni Walk.

I had a mini fleet of VW bugs (I know, 5 points off man card). They were cheap to get, fix and run. And I was always fixing something on them. Later I decided I like VW's best when they belong to someone else.

I will admit (at the cost of a man point or two lol) CRX's are a freakin rocket. my cousin in FLA had one years ago, and he let me drive it, whoooooooooa bundy! dump that clutch at 3 grand, and that thing would snap your neck! once you hit 75 it would fall on it's face, but it was a lot fun till you get there!! lol

Hmmmm....Guess i'm old school. I got the whole "you want a car, earn it and buy it", so that's what I did. $1000 bucks for a '72 Dodge Dart that I loved and respected because it was me that made it happen and I respect my dad for that. My kid will be the same. Work ethic, resposibility and lazy Sundays under the hood, learning from pops.
We'll see what the future brings, but no matter what it is I would want my kid to have the same pride I did by towing the line and making it happen for themselves. Having a kid respect and have pride in their car as well as knowing the work and responsibility it takes to buy and maintain one makes a mountain of difference down the road when they're out in the real world dealing with other aspects in life. It did for me anyways.

Good luck on your hunt...Those Volvo's are battle tanks.

Depends on the kid. My daughter made straight a,s thru high school and a 4.0. I could have made her get a job to buy her own car. But her grades might have suffered. She recieved a 68k scholarship for college. I think I saved money What do you think?

That takes a special type of person anyway. I was never interested in being a straight A student so I worked throughout high school and bought my own car etc. But my class had 6 valedictorians, I had a 3.6 and I got more scholarship money then any of them........ so not sure I'm buyin in!

Worked all throughout college too, probably studied less than high school I guess its why I work where I do instead of NASA lol

My folks paid half of the price of my first car, a 73 Road Runner GTX that I bought for $450 in 1980, so I helped my kids out. My daughter's first car was an 84 Mustang 4 cyl that we got for like a $1,000 and lasted maybe a year before losing a rod. I bought my son an Isuzu Rodeo for $800 that didn't last long either. But both cars gave my kids the experience they needed, and they both financed their own second cars. My youngest bought my oldest son's Mitsubishi Lancer that he bought and paid off early so he could buy a new F-150. Not bad for a bunch of early 20-somethings. :)

Congrat's to you and your daughter, Great achievement, but I agree with kb67mopar. I guess my old man was a hardass because I was expected to achieve A's through high school and hold a job in order to have a car. If not, the car would be gone. My free ride through college was courtesy of the US Military. I fended pretty good in the military being I already had aquired self responsibility, accountability and a work ethic beforehand. When I got out several years back I took life in stride vs. several friends that had the free ticket, no work ethic and no real experience what is was like to maintain a job and pay the bills. You're right, I guess it depends on the kid...question is can she acclimate from academics to the real world without ever having to work and pay the bills and if not, would that really have saved anyone any money?

My son is almost 13 and he already wants to start working on his own car (which we do not have). I will match what he has for a car and help him fix what it needs. He is already saving money for a car, always asking if there is anything he can do to earn some money. His grades are very good plus I never have to tell him to get his homework done before doing anything else. If it stays this way I will do a lot more for his first car. I am luck as he likes the old cars plus he wants to work on it himself as a challenge.

There you go, I should have known, you would have lost that bet... It was a joke... Remember what type of forum your on... I have driven many little POS's small crap box aluminum/tin can toasters rattle trap torque steering roller-skates on wheels...LOL..., Including many Honda's, Toyota's, Nissan's, Mitsubishi's, Lexus, Infinity, etc. with probably far more powerful turbocharged, supercharged or big engines that handle well, {for a front wheel drive car, they're inferior handling to begin with} & the 5-6 spd manual trans is the norm, by the way "I've also drove a few CRX's", my old girlfriend owned one, it was a pile IMHO, she loved it too, but I don't know why... also I have friends & people I worked with, that were into the "tuner scene" {fast & furious wannabees}, that drag raced or auto-crossed or road raced in many different classes or were into the posers show scene... but unlike you, I wasn't that impressed as you were obviously, I can see how someone that doesn't drive allot of different cars or more powerful cars that actually are good handling cars, could &/or would "think", it's fun or a false sense of quality &/or even power & handling, I'm sure it was fun, but so is a damn go-cart & I wouldn't drive one on the street, let alone put an irresponsible 16 y/o kid/child in one of those unsafe cars, to drive on the street either... I worked for/with a larger dealership group for 30 years, with 125 different automotive dealerships, raced all over the US Sprints & Drag Racing, I worked at dealerships all over the western USA & have driven almost every make & model of US made, Japanese & many other much better "European/foreign cars", from 1981 up-to around 2010, still more after that but not as much lately... I base my opinion on knowledge & my experiences, not some hatred for CRX's or bias... I guess we will just agree to disagree...

Meeps you do know, I have always thought that, "more woman/girls should ride BART"...LOL... I agree I had 2 VW's one was a Manx Dune Buggy with a dual-port w/Judson Blower 2100cc, fun as hell, unsafe *** hell too, both handled very well, the Manx had big G/50's front & N/50's rear, but they or I am better off, when they're owned by someone else....
