Or, first time for everything!
Ran my 440 a few days ago, enough to let it fully warm up, and see how much the oil pressure dropped when hot. It was good, cold 50lbs, at temp, settled at 35lbs.

After, noticed a little oil on the floor, at the back of the motor. Crap!
So, without Ma's advice, gotta jack the car up (again), pull the damn inspection plate, and look.
If that rear seal is leaking, might have to throw a wrench...then get to it. Never have had a rear seal leak. And, all left-handed!

You know if some one could just make a fool proof leakless seal they would be a very rich man!

Miller - I know you have been around enough to know the drill - start looking at the top and work your way down. When I was re-installing my transmission a few months ago I found some oil on the lower block - turned out my valve cover bolts had loosed up from compressed gaskets taking a set. Besides, Mopars are supposed to leak - some.

So true....

Yeah, yeah.

Already checked the oil senders, dry, and valve covers. But, have to admit, was not real happy about the Felpro rear seal, anyways, especially the rubber band side seals.
But, I'll do what I have to...just don't like doing things twice. Going to look at my options on the seals, if it does wind up that.

I had a buddy years ago that had an old AMF Harley, that thing leaked everywhere it went.
I asked him why he didnt fix that his reply "was its not leaking, its marking its territory" ...He said later he had in the shop 3x to fix it...

Yep, I have heard many say"It's not a MOPAR if it don't leak".

It's pretty funny (?) that they didn't leak (well, mine didn't) from the factory. I picked up a 68 383 this year that was a take out from a buddies Charger and he said as far as he knew, the engine was original. Well, when I tore it down, it was .060 over and had been decked but it had the factory style rope seal in it. The back of the block was dry and clean while the rest of the engine was a grungy mess. I know they are supposed to seep a little to keep them lubed but I guess this one had just enough to keep it from burning up yet keep the oil in....

AMF...that says it all. I was a HD mechanic for awhile, in the AMF beginnings. My 64 Duoglide didn't leak!

Just don't get...if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Don't get, why they make these changes on parts, if the change is a turd to begin with. Damn, I'm rantin'...again.:D

I did a 84 318 and when I opened it up it had a rope rear seal.No leak. I didn't think that Chrysler were still using them.I'm with you Cranky, went with a rubber seal, 2 years later..Leak......I wonder if you can buy a rope seal anymore ?

Old Harley's were made to leak, my dads 59 panhead leaves a puddle everywhere it goes, And takes 1st place in every show

Well, well, well...

Pulled the trans inspection plate. Only oil, was along the bottom edge, where it bolts to the trans case. Hardly a trace of oil in the bell housing, at the bottom. Front of the converter, and the flexplate, bone dry. Felt around the rear seal, and nothing.
If it's any kind of leak, oil would have slung all around, in there.

Beer time! Think I'm gonna let it ride, and keep an eye on it, for now. Don't have any miles on it, just some run time...maybe an hour, total. Might be it needs to seat.

Oh I'm sure the old rope seals contained the 'A' word that's why they stopped making them... Even though technically it wasn't an airborne dust-type source of asbestos, companies don't want to be anywhere near the liability attached to that stuff anymore...

I think Mancini sells a rope seal...

1967 coronet 440 is right about older Harleys leaking oil. I had a 50 panhead chopper that left a spot everywhere. Not a lot. It was supposed to drip. If it didn't something was wrong. I believe you could adjust it for how much came out. It was the only thing in my life I wished I had back.
