What does GTX stand for?

My high school friends older brother that owned a 65'Buick Gran Sport 400 once said: what the Hell are those GTX's? (Spring of 1967)They are kicking my Butt!. He then went and bought a GTX.

Direct rip off of the GTO I read a great article in Mopar action about the X ! One of the enginners that helped develop the GTX stated this but I know MA MOPAR DID A WAY BETTER JOB OF MAKING A LOADED MUSCLE CAR THEN GM ! Ma mope wanted to put out a loaded high class muscle car to compete for the older guys ! Glad they did love my X can't wait to get her done !

Kinda surprised the 'founding fathers' didn't mention anything about the 'X' classes in drag racing.....meaning experimental. When the factories were coming out with the 'crazy' cars, there wasn't a class for them so the FX (factory experimental) classes were opened.

:iamwithstupid: those were crazy times for Super Stock in the NHRA & other sanctioning bodies, they went from low N/A 11's to Blown Injected running 8's in a single season, scary kind of if you think about it, they didn't know what would actually happen until they actually did it... especially when the AWB cars were added to the FX cars... A/FX AWB, was the birth of Funny Car... only a couple years before the 67 GTX came out

I like Ma Mopar's explanation of the meaning of "GTX" :glasses2:

Also got a kick out of the "sign-of-the-times" with their emphasis on "big 7.75 x 14" high performance Red Streak tires, extra-wide 5.5" wide rims and heavy-duty drum-type brakes..." "Big"? "Wide"? They almost seem miniscule compared to what you would find on a 2014 Charger don't they? And those "drum" brakes? Don't even get me going with those!
