I have a 64 belvedere that i want to make into a sleeper. it has the original slant six in it and i was wondering what the best bang for my buck is engine wise is. any suggestions on engines that have a good amount of horsepower at a realistic price?

You Have To Look Everywhere! On Here, Craig's List, Mopar Websites, Anywhere They Sell Parts. I Bought Another 426 From A Guy In Cleveland In August! Found It On Racing Classifieds Website!

Do what most of us do, build-up a 440 designed as a Max Wedge.
Mine with famed Mopar engine builder and retired Max Wedge racer Dale Reed.
going into my 1963 Dodge Polara.

I agree100% that the 426 was a legend. But before you buy one, know this. There is zero in the aftermarket for off the shelf pistons except stock cast low compression pistons from Egge....and they are 400 bucks. You'll have to go with a cu$$$$tom piston, probably close to $1000.00.

If it were my decision, I would go with a 440. Much more parts available and much more affordable. Bigger engine, too. Just my 2 cents.

I love when you post that. It's so awesome.

Rustys correct.
The 426 heads are way too extreme for the street.
The ports are extremely large and they have typical "big port head" no torque untill the RPMs are high.
My good bud has a 63 Max Wedge car (100 percent gorgeous) and he says it take his car 20 minutes to "warm up" before he can really drive it.
Those Max Wedge cars were not for the "average joe"
By doing up a 440 w/ 906 heads OR nice Edelbrock Aulminums (440 heads) one can eliminate the "race-only" DNA found in the 426 Max Wedge head.
PLUS: Max Wedge = $$$$
Go with a 440.
Better still, go 440 single barrel 4V carb, make it look period correct. Paint it Mopar tourquoise etc.
Cheaper than the cross ram from A & A Transmission (good people)

There is a 440 on Craigslist in Az for $300. Tuscon area, I assume you are near the Phoenix/Scottsdale AZ though.
My suggestion is: Go 440 w/ the Edelbrock aluminum heads/manifold. (saves weight etc).
Just go to Craigslist in your local area, click on "auto parts", "type" in 440 and see what you get.

I think it is "Budniks" that says:
"Fill your library before you fill your garage"
But, who ever it is, that is a WISE saying to go by.

My "Buds" 1963 Dodge Max Wedge engine and compartment.
This IS a 63 Max Wedge engine.

That is the KEY:
"Realistic Price"

For a sleeper, 440, boring paint color, hub caps and the quitest muffler you can find behind dumps only one pipe showing at the rear. no clues

A 383 would be another option!A little less money initially, you can use alum.heads and Hp manifolds,a mild cam and have a period correct sleeper!

Real simple. Get Don Dulmage's book. "Old Reliable: The Practical 440 Race Motor". Done deal.

I have a 73HP code 440 in my 64 Bel and I wouldn't have it any other way. Big, loud, and reasonably fast for not a ton of money. Runs good on pump gas, parts are easy to source and reasonably priced, and you can build it any way you want it. Easy Max Wedge clone too, if that's what you want.

definetly a 440, cheap and very available, very easy to get lots of HP for your sleeper. no replacement for displacement, so stroke it.
