HiYa all, I bought a 62 Polara 500 that someone stuffed a 71-383 & a 727 into it just to "move it around". I'm looking for feed back on what you "62-65" guys are using for intakes/engines & transmissions now a days. Whats the best, reasonable, cost effective set up to improve this car? Probally would like a street/strip setup. I have been "out of the loop" on the 62-65 world for quite a while. 062.jpg Are the stock early ball & trunion trans worth re-building? Thanks for any input and comments! MoPar to ya!

That is a GREAT looking Polara. I have a 63 Sport Fury that is probably about equal to your Polara in condition, but looks so plain jane in the original tan exterior color. My car has the original 383 and 727 pushbutton it was built with. I have a small crack in the block, so I purchased a late 62 date coded 383 and will rebuild it to replace the original eng. I'm going to store the orig 383 and eventually fix and rebuild it. I finally decided to keep the car as original as possible. Most of the people I have talked to have used a built 440, exspecially for street/strip use--with a hot cam and blueprinting you could hit 450 to 500 hp fairly easy. I don't know what people are doing transmission wise. I am going to stick with my orig 727. Good Luck--post more pictures of your car when you can

Nothin wrong with a 383. That's what I'm building for my 65 Coronet. .030 over, stock stroke with KB400 domed pistons, 516 ported closed chamber heads, with an Edelbrock Torker and a Holley 750 vacuum secondary with Dougs headers. The block has just been decked and bottom end balanced. I'll have a short block built in another week or so. Just gotta find the time to put it together.

Great lookin car you have.

I'm jeaous if these great looking Polara's and Savoys...LOL

if your already set-up for a big block then any wedge will work nicely. i have a 440 6-pak in my 65 coronet and use the 65 cable tranny. i had most of the parts laying around so this was a no brainer combo for me. i've always thought a 385hp-413 would be neat in a 62 dodge. don't hear about them much. 383's are fine, very reliable.

Around here, 440's and BB 727's are dirt cheap!

I bought mine for under $400 for the motor and $50 for the transmission core.

They bolt in (later 727's use the Imperial Services mount)

This opens up the fairly large aftermarket for 440's that includes every kind of street and strip head you can think of, stroker cranks and intakes.

I run a fairly mild 440 now but will eventually stroke it to 500", put on Stealth heads and use the Holley Street Dominator intake so I can keep everything under the stock, flat hood.

If it doesn't matter much as far as which motor you use I'd, definetly go with the 440. There are a lot more options for the 440 especially when it comes to piston selection. Good Luck

Great looking car. A year ago I almost pulled the trigger on a yellow pro street Fury, think it was a 62. I love the details those cars.

Your car looks great ! Do you have any idea on how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go ? My 63 Sport Fury is a street/strip car and at first I built a mild 440 that ran mid 11's. And you can make a 440 look just like a 426 Max Wedge or the low block look like a 413 Maxie. Two years ago I built a new eng and spent more money so I went to a stroker kit since it was not much more. Now I run a 493 eng that runs on 92 pump and I race thru the pipes. But you can make the 383 run good also. I guess that why I ask how fast and how much are you looking to spend ? Ron

I guess $4 to $5 K on a 440 that someone might not need any more. If so, the domino effect will kick in. It still has front and rear drums, would have to do a disc conversion, has original dash wiring ( I don't like that for safety reasons) probally have to go painless, the interior needs to be freshened up, new windshield........etc etc etc...... hence the domino effect! :spider:

I have a 496 in my 65 street car and I love it.. This is built off of a 440 block. If I had to do it over again I would go with the 383 and use a 440 source stroker kit to make it a 496. Header options for our cars a limited with the rb motor and they are not cheap. I think it has been said that you could use a set of headman on a b motor in our 62-65 cars and that would be a big savings.. Unless you want and have a grand to throw into a set of headers for it.

The 383 gives you a bit more room and there are plenty of parts out there to make it into whatever you may want it to do... Or you could always do a 512 400 b block for the same money as the 383 or 440... I have never had any problems with 440source stroker kits..

i have a 63 fury with a 446 and stealth heads ported elde torker 2 intake 850 demon carb and a 4speed i love the way this thing runs bob

Curious if you have ever raced your 62 yet at the track ? Is that Victor heads on it ? Wondering what kind of power it is making and how fast at 572 cubes !! Ron
