Which motor do you prefer? From one stop light to the next. For friendly easy tuning. For biggest bang for the buck.

440, it was built for alot of years so ther are plenty of cores and lots of after market parts out there, and it makes lots of torque which is great for the street

I actually prefer 383-400 B-Low Deck stroker builds myself, a 383/431ci or 400/451ci 413-426-440-3.75" crank turned to fit, is really a cheap & easy build, lighter narrower shorter, with stronger main webbing, uses allot of the same parts, custom pistons is the worst part, but many suppliers have "off the shelf" combos for them today... What I voted for, the best bang for the buck OEM style MoPar "Street Engine" is probably the 440 RB, lots of tire smoking torque & easy to work on... the 426ci Hemi's were a pain to keep a good tune, expensive & the 440-6bbls would run with them pretty much in stock trim, early on the 413ci or 426ci Wedge & Max Wedge was a great affordable combo, but today they are getting pretty dang pricey... Nothing wrong with a well tuned 383ci either, or even a 340ci SB...

440! It's the apex engine. Buy anything smaller and you'll eventually end up upgrading in the end, so why waste time and money going smaller? :)

its not on the list but back in the day a 392 hemi in the rod

We used to run 392's in our Drag Boats back in the 70's until they dried up. When it came time to choose another combo we decided to go with Chevy 427 high deck truck blocks because they were pretty stout and the junkyards were full of them at the time. Hated to switch to Bowtie motors, but they were cheap and plentiful, besides we made horsepower with the blower and the methanol. :headbang:

Best overall Block I have to agree with those saying either or the RB 383, OR the RB 440....big bang (HP) for the buck, lots of either around and tons of aftermarket parts.....

something like 3,000,000 383ci's produced in various HP performance levels 1959 up-thru 1971 vs 750,000 440ci's produced, in several HP performance levels 1966-1978, plenty of both available, especially 383's, I'm not sure how many 400's made from 72-78 {74?}... cars, truck & motorhomes

well since I must vote it will be the 440

As a guy that has vast knowledge of things that do not relate to motors I picked 340 because that is the first Mopar engine I had ever heard of. And it's what is in my ride so the way I see it, y'all may be right about the 383 or 440 but I'm going to choose to ignore it. lol

440 for my ride . I have them all and ran them all. I just like the from stock power and big gane with small add on's !
Have a 400 that I was thinking of doing a stroker but am going to try and buld a blower 440. Never had a huffer so now is the time to dive in !?!?

340s were great when new. They were a stealth engine that had more power than the larger 350 and 351 Brand X engines, but that was in an era when engines were largely stock except for an aftermarket carb and headers. :) Once improved cams, lifters, rockers, manifolds, ignition systems, fuel pumps, heads, and even performance pulleys came along, the relevance of the 340 faded fast. It didn't take guys long to figure out you could drop a ton of $$$ juicing up a 340, or you could spend half as much and get a 440 making even more power.

426 HEMIs had the power, if you didn't mind spending a lot of time tuning them and setting them up just right nearly every day, especially the throttle linkages.

The 440 rules.

actually most popular was the 383ci it was produced in 4 time the #'s, as 440's, but the old adage "there's no replacement for displacement", probably applies here too... Arguably thou, But the 318ci A, LA & Magnum was until thru 1999 the most popular used/sold street engine in all Mopars history... best seller ever in any of Chryslers V8 line up http://www.allpar.com/mopar/318.html

I think the reason there are more 383s out there than 440s is affordability. Priced equally, I have no doubt that the 440s would far outnumber 383s.

Voted 383 but like the 360. Had a 360 in a 74 RR that stayed side by side with a 440 I had in a 70 charger.
