Im with Roadrunnerman and budnicks. Im a huge fan of small blocks.. 318 are a dime a dozen, cheap and good source of power.. and for not much more, you can snag up a 360 and put it in just about anything you want.

Don't get me wrong, I have had a 383, and a 440, great engines, I just want to be able to afford to build and drive my car

As a guy that has vast knowledge of things that do not relate to motors I picked 340 because that is the first Mopar engine I had ever heard of. And it's what is in my ride so the way I see it, y'all may be right about the 383 or 440 but I'm going to choose to ignore it. lol

Well for a small block Mopar the 340 was THEE best so.. but overall block of any size, the 440 has to be the best known of or able to get parts for etc..... BUT as the 340, it was the small block mirror of the 440.....The best of both worlds as it as a small black could get big block power and have just as much parts availability as the 440 so.....

BUT this is where the question should have been split.....small block and big block Mopar.....

As far as 440 and 383 weren't most of the parts interchangeable? I mean, saying BOTH were "RB" type blocks, except for the pistons themselves...?????

440! It's the apex engine. Buy anything smaller and you'll eventually end up upgrading in the end, so why waste time and money going smaller? :)

Apex engine? The 383 has substancial displacement but higher reving. Mid range on the 383 is untouchable. I have beaten more 440s than I have lost to, primarily in 3rd gear. The 440 while a great engine, is greatly over glamorised.

I have put my share of 440's, 454's, and 396's on the trailer with my 383's over the years, but I do love the big cubic inches!

318 most popular poly and la magnum the new hemi and v-10 were and v 6 were born from the 318 .... still there are many more out there than the others.

If my "reworked" 413 goes...I will not even flinch.....it will be a 440:sunny:........

'er mabe a built 383???:edgy:, no,Sonny says;" it will be a 440":icon_thumright:

maybe a 383??? hummm:eusa_think:

im in the process of building a 438 stroker out of a 383 with stealth aluminum heads 525 comp ex energy cam performer rpm dual plane and 770 street avenger holley. I like the rev's of the 383's better and the fact it is replacing a 440 that spun a rod bearing LOL. This will be my second 383 build and the first one survived my teenage years OMG....I used to whip that horse all the time and she is still running in my 68 charger.....only god knows how...its like those blocks were made for abuse. im older now and have a softer foot though;]

Sounds like an interesting type 383/B-low deck stroker build , 4.310" bore 3.750" stroke...

Budnicks nailed it. I'll vote however; have said it before and will say it again... bore/stroke ratios of the 426 wedge/hemi; 427 rat; 340 LA; 302 chebby.. etcetera... etcetera.. DW and I went out with the guy that farms our land last week (used to do suspension set up for a C.A.R.T. team and also raced NHRA Super Gas. towards the end they were de-stroking 454's to get something close to the 427's ratios. just sayin'

Popular means a lot of people have them.

I said it before somewhat... If that's the criteria, then you probably should have had 318ci on the list, it was the most popular V8 engine combination ever in MoPars in general, by like 10:1 over all the rest... of those you chose to have in the poll, the 383ci was by-far the most popular engine installed & ordered, 4:1 over the 440ci, 100+:1 over the 426ci like 3:1 over the 340ci in available years, the 360ci & later the 5.9ltr. Magnum & especially the 5.2ltr. Magnum truck engines, is probably up there among the more modern V8 engines, the the 383ci was the std engine far before many of the others were even available, millions were installed in many different body styles, so by shear #'s on "your poll choices" it's the 383ci

I think the reason there are more 383s out there than 440s is affordability. Priced equally, I have no doubt that the 440s would far outnumber 383s.

VERY CORRECT !! REMEMBER WHEN OUR CARS WERE NEW IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE BEST BANG FOR THE $$$$$$$$ !! THATS WHY ROAD RUNNERS OUT SOLD GTX'S 4 to 1 PRICE !!!! A FAIRLY LOW OPTIONED GTX WAS ALMOST A GRAND MORE THEN A RR WITH A 383 AND A FEW UP GRADES !! IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE ALMIGHTY $$$$$$$$$$$$ :imho:

440 for Life :headbang:

In my initial post I said "from one stop light to the next, biggest bang for the buck".

Back in the day the slant six was the most popular..... today the 318 is the most popular motor. 340 was rare then and more so now the stock 360's are becoming rare... true the 340 and 440 6pack motors sold a lot of popular magazines. The last running mopar after everything else is used up will be a 318 bored .090 over
