Hi all,
I just pulled all the wiring out from under the hood of my '65 Coronet hardtop as it was a mess.
Has anyone got any idea as to what this little gizmo on my distributor is? It's mounted on two small pieces of ally, I assume as a heat sink, and has 8752G27B stamped on the back. Nothing comes up for this number.
It's wired in from both sides of the coil and then to the dizzy.
I have no other electronic control module but the dizzy is magnetic pickup, regulator has been changed to electronic, coil is a Street Fire (MSD) part #5527 ( think this is for F*@ds and it had been screwed to the inner fender with chipboard screws) and plug leads are MSD.
I'm wondering if I should bin the lot and start again.
Also, I have a mini starter that's wired in with three cables. One is battery positive and then a wire from each of the two main studs on the starter relay which connect across the two studs on the starter solenoid. I don't think this is correct.
I'm looking to do several of the MAD Electrical upgrades as I did these on my '65 convertible and they worked great.
I just wanted to check what the gizmo is and if the starter needed some particular wiring.
Thanks IMG_0625[1].jpg

That's a GM HEI ignition module that is in most GM cars from the mid 70's and up. It looks like some rigged it to run you ignition.

That's a VERY common HEI module that you can modify any mopar to run with its a great set-up and does away with the ballast and provides a full 12v of spark, great performance modification, and the best part is, those modules are dirt cheap and available everywhere, just chuck a spare module in your glovebox and you'll never have to worry about it.
i highly recommend you leave it as it is because its a much better set up than what we have on our cars stock.

be careful when wiring the distributor leads up to this...if you wire up the pick up coil wires backwards, you will get retarded timing when revving up engine....just swap the 2 wires around on module and it will give advance timing...had this happen one day at our shop....customer had dist wires reversed ........drove me bonkers for about half a day

Ok thanks all. I'll leave it on there for now. I don't really like the look of it though.
What would be an efffective replacement? I was thinking of Petronix or similar.

Anyone help with the starter wiring?

Read up on the HEI now I know what it is. Seems like a good upgrade so I'm leaving it on. You can even get a little ally heat sink/ bracket to mount out of sight on the dizzy (or make one).

Yes the HEI module IS an upgrade.

as far as your starter goes its possible the prev owner installed a modern stock starter from a magnum engine, but it's hard to say without a pic, (the newer dodge ram 2500 trucks with a 360 motor came stock with a "mini hi torque" starter (as did many newer dodge vehicles))

If you don't like it because it looks bad ... then try this mounting method. This is what I plan to use.

Sorry ... i did not read all of the previous posts

P.S. I don't see any starter wiring pictures.
