Hyundai and Kia you hear slot about how great the warranty is. I don't have personal experience with them, but have heard mechanics say that there's a ton of stuff not covered.
Around here they all look like they are falling apart after a few years.
People drive them like they hate them.

I worked at Luk for awhile, a they had the toughest quality requirements for torque converters (I was told.)

I've got 31+ years in with Chrysler (so far). The first 19 years were at JTE (Jeep/Truck Engineering) then, in 2008, I moved to CTC (Chrysler Tech Center). So, my wife and I drive Chrysler products (2013 Dodge Journey for me and a 2019 Jeep Cherokee for my wife).

I always bought 'American' brands though we know how much this has been discombobulated over the decades with what is made here and not. I made a decision to buy an '07 Sonata (year old with 10k on it) for my wife after getting peeved about our Intrigue requiring $4,800 in engine work with only 50k on it. Liked that Old's a lot; but my go to shop wouldn't work on it being a Cad motor says take it to dealer. Was seriously looking at a CTS; but the style of the Sonata piqued my interest. It has the 6 cyl motor and got a great X warranty they don't give out anymore. (I got most if it returned as I didn't have any major repairs.) This was one of the best cars I ever had, near zero problems. I got another one, an '09 more decked out and stayed with nothing newer as it was the last year this model came with the 6 motor (being impressed with the '07 motor) and finding this one with under 10k on it. We gave the '07 to our daughter who has driven it a lot for years now with 190k on it still running quiet and driving tight and she drives on shitty-city streets. I have 50k on the '09 and few hassles with it. The upkeep has been a lot less than the several Chryslers I bought going back to the early '90's. Still buy my Dodge trucks though on my 4th. Just like 'em. And think the Sonata's were at least built here. So ahh...no disagreement here.

My daughter had a PT GT turbo and I hated working on that pitiful thing. Said I'd never own a VW bug but got a 71 Super Beetle because it was dirt cheap. It only had 30k miles on it but man, what a pile. Down on power and sorry fuel mileage but it would get great mileage if you drove it slower than molasses in winter time. Didn't know much about the auto stick until that pile came into my life. Also didn't like the way it lost front end grip on a wet road in a turn. I know a lot of people like them but don't understand the attraction. Had a fleet of 1st Mustangs with two being Fastbacks. Really liked those but didn't like the things that broke and when a 289 breaks a rear end, something is really not built right imo. GM's....well, for some reason my thumbs turn black with those. Chrysler products....really can't say anything bad because never had a bad one. Dad got a 69 New Yorker that was crap from the word go except for that sweet running 440 that was in it.

More for the rest of us then, I reckon:

We've had two ('06 and this '12, both hemi R/T models) and they're extremely well
built (like tanks!) and have served us very well, no matter what name is on them.

Deep down we're mopar guys! Tell ya, the Sonata is right quick; I fear it might take my old Plymouth a bit to catch it off the line! Now, my other daughter's CRV? She loves it and it has held up fine; but damn it goes through motor oil. Glad I'm a stickler for checking fluids discovering it soon after she got it and had to get a lesson from dad about checking it regular and keeping a couple quarts in the car as she later moved to Miami to take a job. Had it to the dealer a few times and they ran some trans oil through it. And the friggin X 'gold' warranty we got for it was crap not covering what the problem is. Well, found a ton of complaints about it on the net...crummy rings. Contacted Honda and they tell me a quart every 1000 miles is normal! I said bullshit, I can drive my '63 Plymouth all summer and consumes no oil and the Sonata gets a change every 4,000 miles and zero oil lost btw changes. I wondered what would a happened if she ran the motor dry ruining it? When I found this problem the first time was shocked as it was 2.5 qts low. At this rate, motor would drain dry btw a normal change!

Well, I didn't burn off any belts from my beater Dakota like I was told would happen when I put STP in the power steering pump lol. It was leaking badly at the rack and was going to replace it soon but soon turned into a year or so later after it nearly quit leaking

Good point, I have tossed in a qt of heavier oil and now with her being in Miami, always hotter than you know there. She drove home over 4th of July and I changed oil + added an oil additive before we drove back and I flew back home. Still, like clockwork uses a qt every thousand miles! When we chat on the phone I usually ask her "You check your oil?" Most times she says yep, sometimes it's "oh thanks for reminding me". Driving in Miami is a bitch with backed up traffic and running the A/C full blast. On the freeway it's either going 75mph or zero. I 'remind' her "If ya run your motor out of oil you'll be stuck where you are waiting for a tow truck and buying a new motor." Car upkeep is never on the minds of my wife or daughters until something bad happens. Feel more helpless if this would happen to my kid (well ahh she's 33 lol) living 1500 miles away..

I live in the Houston area so I know about heat and freeways that either haul butt or are stopped. Mine youngest is 33 and had to learn the hard way on several issues with cars....even after telling her what to look out for. And she's always running late and in a hurry. That's one thing I was always good about and was usually early for work or appointments. She got that crap from her mother....

Yep - and fortunately, they do build some cool stuff these days.
Ram, Challenger, Charger - just make sure you start at the 5.7 and go up from there if budget
allows.
