What rear end is this?

One thing is for sure, she has factory air.

Know of any good exploded diagrams of the 8-1/4 axle around anywhere? Good detailed installation instructions would be great too! But I know I may not get that lucky. This is not a third member installation and I know its got to be right or the assembly will be wasted real quick.
Well, third member or integral rear both set up the same. It's easy to buy a third member and just plug it in but someone set up up and hopefully right. The pinion depth has to be right and so does the back lash. There is a bit of leeway in both but not all that much. There's lots of youtube vids on setting up gears and most of them are pretty good. I have a set of 'set up' bearings for 8 3/4's and 60's that have been honed to slip fit and will use those to find where the pinion wants to be then press on the new bearings with the required shims once that setting is found. Same thing for the carrier bearings. Some people will hone the bearings that they will use for the final set up but make them 'snug' instead of tight. I've seen some rear bearings .005" tight on the pinion and that's WAY too tight imo! Never had any problems with bearings that were .0005" tight. Those go off and on relative easily but for severe duty, I like at least .001" tight and .002" is better but a bearing that's .002" tight won't be very easy to get back off if you miss the setting. Just pulled apart a Dana 60 that was in one of my race cars that ran 10.60's and the rear pinion bearing pressed off fairly easily but haven't checked how tight it was. Those gears had well over 300 passes on them and I would guess they were .0005" tight based on my experience with bearings.

Another thing...There are RACE gears and STREET gears. The difference is that the RACE gears are actually made from a slightly softer material that absorbs shock better but does not last as long.

And you do NOT want to use them on the street....but are they available for the 8 1/4? It's been awhile since being able to find them for the 8 3/4.

As a follow up for others found this video on 8-1/4 assembly done really well.

The side bearing adjusters are a nice touch....wish my Dana 70 had that because it would make back lash set up much easier! Also, if you mark one bearing cap, there's really no reason to mark the other lol

Btw, that really short crush sleeve is worse than what comes in the 89 case 8 3/4! And it's usually easier to use a small tip in a torch and heat up the bearing race while the pinion gear is clamped in a vice but I don't understand why he's removing it if the gears are shot unless he's trying to save the shim behind the bearing......be careful when using chisels on bearings. Small pieces can fly.

The rear end in the third picture is a lot more fun, but it also has it's headaches.

Most of the time very expensive too!! Could have bought several nice cars after the last 'rear end' got done with me......

There was a time i felt like a game show host. I gave away a house, a car, and cash.....divorce court.

At least I was able to keep my house at least. I bought it before the rear end exploded but it went through another rear end before the last one :D Will there be more rear ends? Only the mechanical kind lol

They are all kinda mechanical in nature if you think about it ... .. .
