What small blocks will drop in

Actually two questions...

Will any 340-360 small block drop into my 72 Satellite? Or do I have a range of years to choose from?

Same question for 318 intake manifolds. I want to drop a 4bbl on mine, and I'm hoping to find something usable in the junk yard. Do I need to stay in a range of years, or will any 318 intake work?

Then engine question is a long term question, I still haven't decided if I want to stay small or go big block. Still too much to learn about the pros/cons of each from a power/torque vs cost standpoint.

I have tons of these type of interchange questions. I have no intention of keeping my car original, or cloning it into a RR. I just want to make it a fun driveable car. If you all have any good interweb links to interchange info that would be great.

Yup. Any small block will bolt in. One of them has to have a bastard motor mount. I cannot remember which engine or which side it is. Regardless, with the correct mounts, all small blocks wil go.

EDIT: I THINK I remember the 273/318 takes one mount and the 340/360 takes another. One side is the same for all, but the other side is 340/360 specific. It's no big deal as long as you know ahead of time and have the right mounts.

Thanks Rusty. Any thoughts on the 318 4bbl intake

There was no such thing from the factory. They never made a 318 port size 4 barrel intake. They did, however, slap the 360 4 barrel intake on the small port 318 head by the millions from the factory. Also, on police applications, they got the 360 heads and intake on the 318. Are you looking for a 4 barrel intake? I have a nice 72 340 intake.

Yeah, I'm looking for intake and carb on the cheap. Like I said, I'm gonna hit the junk yard LKQ has a u-pull-it location about 5 miles from me, so I'm hoping I can find some usable stuff. At some point in the not to distant future I want to throw headers and exhaust at her.

Long term goals are for an all together different power package, so I'm not looking to drop any real money in this engine.

I'll sell you this 72 340 intake for 100 shipped if you want it. It's heavy and I wouldn't be makin much. It's a good one without the EGR provision.

mdbuschsr you should snatch up the intake offer by RustyRatRod that's a good deal for a great intake for your 318 and will work well for you!

It's the driver's side mount bracket that is different between the 273/318 and the 340/360. Keep in mind that the intake ports will be bigger vs what the 318 heads are so there will be a step up for the air/fuel to go up over. Not a good idea if you are looking for some kind of a performance gain vs a reduction but it's not hard to port match the teen heads to the larger intake. Having a smooth transition going into the smaller head port is a lot better than having a step up into it.

All true all true, but the factory musta not thought it was a real big deal cause they sure put a pile of um on small port heads.

Acutally they did make a 318 4-bbl factory manifold. 73/4 RR came standard with a 318 4-bbl. So did the later F-body ones. Some mid 70-80 318 had 4-bbls.

A hondo for that 340 manifold is a good price.

I bet if you measure them, they are all 340/360 port size. I've seen people say they had one and I proved them wrong everytime. I aint gonna say they never made one, but I have yet to see one, Rodney's never seen one, Charles has never seen one. That's ninty years plus experience aint ever seen a 318 port size four barrel manifold. ......but again, I aint sayin it didn't happen. I caint count how many times I been proved wrong with that. lol

As far as port size, I don't know. You would probably know better than me. I may have mis-read your post. You say they never make a 318 manifold with 318 port size?

Not a four barrel. Not to my knowledge. I know from first hand experience that Chrysler put the 360 intake on the 318 engine and with 318 heads. Mismatched ports right from the factory. I cannot count how many known original engines I've torn down and seen that configuration, and I have yet to see a four barrel intake with 318 port sizes. Now, I'm not counting the early 273 stuff. That's different.

There were a lot of things that the factory didn't think were a big deal back then....that's why you see home grown 318's running fast on the 1/4 and in stock form. If they had built engines back then like they do now, they would have run much better. Now a days they know what's important in making an engine more efficient and put out better hp numbers....not to mention, electronic management helps too.

the 360 is the engine with the different drivers side motor mount. i have a 73 340 at. thermoquad you can have for 75.00 it needs a kit as it has been sitting for about 6 years, but it ran very well i drained the gas and oiled the mixture srews and metering rod plunger when i stored it. i can mail it to ya and that is a good price on the intake they are getting scarce without the extra smog stuff

I'm hookin him up with a 72 340 intake and a 1980s model Thermoquad Superquad. Electric choke and all. That oughtta do it. lol
