Just got back from the only driveshaft shop left in the Lower NY, upper NJ area.
Needed to get my driveshaft shortened a bit for the new S60 rear.

Shop gets GREAT reviews and, let's face it, they're the only game in town.

Just under $300 to lose 1 1/8"

Whole damn driveshaft was only $500 new to begin with.

I didn't want to show my surprise at the price, I just smiled and ran my credit card through.

No one ever said this was a cheap hobby.....

Even with my employee discount it would probably be close to $200 to have a driveshaft cut, welded, straightened and balanced. Shop labor rates are not cheap anymore, neither is the specialized equipment so $300 isn’t terribly outrageous for a retail job.

I have no doubt but...damn!! what happened to the days where you could get it done for under $100
used to be 2 or 3 shops local to me that did it.
Now I have to travel an hour.

I sense myself becoming an old curmudgeon with every key stroke.

F that! I'm gonna shorten mine the redneck way once i get to that point. Angle grinder, welder, and maybe some hose clamps if it needs balancing. Gotta love youtube!

When I swapped my '95 Grand Cherokee AT to MT, I had my front drive shaft shortened and a new rear made up. That was $500. I may have had it done at the same place you shopped, as I was in NJ at the time.

There’s a little more to it than that. The FSM spec is .010” total indicator runout or less which means heating and quenching the tube to straighten it.

I paid $500 only 3 years ago for a brand new 3" driveshaft with 1350 U-joints
I just checked on Dr Diff's site and it's still the same price.

...in 1991.

I do have a collection from different parts cars now,
I think I'm up to 6 if memory serves.
