IMHO in this case I'd say $75-$150 is fair
not giving it away, but reasonable priced
The value of that set up is the case, not the gear ratio
especially the 489 case
(nothing wrong with a pre-69, 742 case either)
value & worth is all over the place
------------------------------------------------------------------
IMHO to most hobbyists, unless it's a needed part for a resto
the 2.76:1 gear & open diff, is not worth much if anything
except to someone that only needs that set-up/combo
-------------------------------------------------------------------
you can buy a new modular Iron 489 case,
with new gears, bearing etc. & a Sure-grip or Eaton diff either yoke
from Dr. Diff for $1,275-ish
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I've bought several good 742 with SureGrips
& gears ranging from 3.23:1-5.13:1 gears
for less than or around $350 to $500, 7290 yoke
from good people, not trying to gouge you
a lil' more "usually" for a 489 case
I've never broken a 742 pinion or case,
but I know the limits too
& I've had 700hp & a TF, with a 3250# RR/car in front of them
it's not recommended, but you'd be surprised what they can handle
best to go to a Dana 60 or S-60 at that power level
used to get either of them 742 or 489 for $50-$150
with a good diff & good gears, all day long 15-20 years ago
before the pricing gouge started
