So I know the price for third members in general has gone up in recent years like about everything else. Asking because I have someone wanting to buy a 2.76:1 third member from me. These are used not rebuilt. I assume they are in good shape? One is a 489 case with large yoke. The other is a 742 case with small yoke. I don't want to get greedy here. Just wondering what fair market value might be? Thanks!

Sure Grip ? Or not ?

As with with all used parts, whatever the buyer is willing to pay. I would think a 2.76 one wheel is not worth much. Not to me anyway. $75 maybe.

With that gear and no sure grip just the carrier has value. $50-75

If no work needed to use, $150 each is a fair price. Just my opinion.

Seems like most of you are thinking in terms of a gear ratio you don't want. A parts candidate for a performance gear ratio upgrade. I'll clarify the OP. This person is LOOKING for a third member with 2.76 gears. They WANT to install it in their car with 2.76 gears. So the question is, how much are you willing to pay for a gear ratio you WANT?

150 tops if its a bolt in with no issues. you won't find another willing buyer in this lifetime........... shipping will kill any deal

When a guy needs a 489 or 742 case? I've seen 2-300. Then go find a yoke.
The innards are junk to most people.
Probably worth more gutted.

I picked up a 741 case 3:23 SG for $100 from a friend. It was a great deal but I see 489 case SG 3:23's go for close to $900 and that's nuts!

Why I was REAL happy with my 3.23 suregrip x 742 purchase last week for $700 Canuck Bucks ($550US). Got the housing and axles for $500 Cdn ($390US)

$150 complete, $75 case only on craigslist in OR

6-9 for suregrip.

IMHO in this case I'd say $75-$150 is fair
not giving it away, but reasonable priced

The value of that set up is the case, not the gear ratio
especially the 489 case
(nothing wrong with a pre-69, 742 case either)

value & worth is all over the place

------------------------------------------------------------------

IMHO to most hobbyists, unless it's a needed part for a resto
the 2.76:1 gear & open diff, is not worth much if anything
except to someone that only needs that set-up/combo

-------------------------------------------------------------------

you can buy a new modular Iron 489 case,
with new gears, bearing etc. & a Sure-grip or Eaton diff either yoke
from Dr. Diff for $1,275-ish

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I've bought several good 742 with SureGrips
& gears ranging from 3.23:1-5.13:1 gears
for less than or around $350 to $500, 7290 yoke
from good people, not trying to gouge you
a lil' more "usually" for a 489 case

I've never broken a 742 pinion or case,
but I know the limits too
& I've had 700hp & a TF, with a 3250# RR/car in front of them
it's not recommended, but you'd be surprised what they can handle
best to go to a Dana 60 or S-60 at that power level

used to get either of them 742 or 489 for $50-$150
with a good diff & good gears, all day long 15-20 years ago
before the pricing gouge started

Update: I learned more of the story. As it turns out, my friend needed it to fullfil part of a trade he made with another guy. So to help my friend get out of the bind he was in, I gave it to him for free. He's helped me out a lot on my car so it just made sense to return a favor. So it all worked out. But I do have a second set to sell, so now I have a ballpark figure of what to ask for them. Thanks all for your suggestions.

I recently bought this setup Clutch type sure grip with 3:55 gears new (new rebuilt) I think I paid $700 plus shipping but this is new
