My Home-depot, John deere riding mower die...I’m in the market for a riding lawn mower for home use. I have a good sized lawn less that 1 acre, but want a good riding lawn mower. Who makes the best riding lawn mower?

You only have one? When I was a kid, my brother kicked me in the croakies & I had two achers.

I have a real John Deere, not the MTD home depot knock off.its going on 15 years old.the John Deere that the big box stores sell are not built the same as the ones you buy from the dealer, the price tells you they are built better.Mine has been a good tractor, it has a Kohler engine.

Murray's are cheap, I've beaten mine like a rented mule on my 3 acres, for 10 years...17.5 horse, b&s. Kohler is (was?) A good one, but expensive. Most small john Deeres were relabled Murrays or similar.

Buy an older John Deere. Mine is almost 20 yrs old and runs and cuts perfect.

I have had my snapper for 23 years and I've had to replace a cable twice and a $5 rubber drive wheel once. Best $1600 I've ever spent.

John Deere or husquavrna from a dealer...about the two best for the money.

I have a Craftsman with a 17 Kohler that's going on 11 trouble free years.

Pops1967GTX,

If you want a great tractor and the best cut in the industry then go with a Simplicity.

Are you from the Rochester area?

I have a few year old Kubota. It has a Kohler engine. The real reason I picked it over any other was because the seat has springs under it, and a lot are "Rigids". So it is actually quite nice to "ride on". As for the rest of the machine, it has been trouble free so far.

My John Deere is 18 yrs old. One of the better investments I ever made. 800 hours on it now.

Cub Cadets are good...it's what they specialize in. I was back-and-forth between them, Massey Fergusen, and John Deere.

MF was the most expensive.
When I asked our local JD farm dealer why they did not offer the new (cheaper) mowers, I was told that they refused to because they were crap and that they did not want dissatisfied customers coming back.
Cub Cadet was less than the JD and available at Lowes.

I found and bought a heavily used, 3yr old, 'real' JD. Other than a battery, oil, & filters...I have put nothing into it. Going on 10 years now. I have mowed, plowed snow, towed more weight than I should, fabbed up a tine to install in-ground electric fence, and it just keeps going. I paid more than a new Craftsman would have cost. Money well spent. The twin cylinder is twice as quiet as the competition...I can hear the neighbors' Troy-Built, Craftsman and Husky over mine...while I'm mowing!

Once you eliminate all the brands/models built by MTD there's not much left. My 782 Cub Cadet is almost thirty years old. I replaced the engine about 10 years ago. Who knows what all my three boys did with it when they were growing up. I know they had "Wheelie" contests.

I have a Gravely 800 that I used but am currently restoring it since the weather has finally been colder to stop the lawn from growing. Gravely's are work horses and weigh 700lbs+ cast iron so they can definitely handle a few acres.

Husquavrna ...a little le$$ than a John Deere but same rugged quality build.... AND ITS ORANGE :hello2:

I may catch a little hell here but i'd never buy another John Deere. Bought one new from a jd dealer. Trans leaked from day one. dealer couldn't get it fixed after two tries. Sold the pos with less than 200 hours on it. Worst purchase ever.
I now have an everride hornet zero turn. Great machine. Mows 10 mph, 19 hp motor, 2 pumps, and made in the usa.
