Whats wrong with this pic?

And....my last post has been proven wrong
1. Pulled #1 cylinder plug and wire
2. Inserted dowel rod and had helper watch for when the dowel rod reached top and started to go back down to get TDC
3. Dampner mark aligned with 0
4. Pulled distributor and moved oil pump until dizzy pointed towards #1 cylinder when inserted
5. Installed distributor cap
6. moved all wires to correct spots on distributor.
7. installed plug and wire

Tried to start car, no luck. Moved distributor a few nudges. car still wont start. Had partner pump gas a little while turning engine over. Nothing but a popping and a few flames out the carb.

car still wont start....any suggestions

You are now 180 out. The pump shaft is still in the correct position because the slot is 180 degrees across already. Simple, pull the distributor take the cap off and rotate the rotor 180 and reinstall. Don't rotate the motor, just the distributor shaft. Do not move the wires on the cap.

I like it! It all looks correct, yet it is working off the #6 cylinder.

Also, if you look in the spark plug hole, you will see the piston will come up twice, because it takes two revolutions to fire all 8 cylinders; once for the EXHAUST stroke and once for the COMPRESSION stroke. You evidently saw the piston crown on the exhaust stroke, not the compression stroke. Sounds like you're getting there. BTW, the item you're calling a dizzy, is actually a ROTOR. Just for clarification...lol.

The easiest way to see if you're 180 out is to just move each wire to the opposite terminal on the rotor cap and give the starter a spin.

It's easier to just remove the distributor, turn the rotor 180 degrees and put the distributor back on than it is to move all the wires.

I could do it in under a minute, no tools needed. :)

That is true but the OP's objective is to have the #1 cap position pointing toward the #1 cylinder as stated in his first post.

The OP's first post mentioned nothing about #1 cap position, but did say that he thought it was 180 out. This was just a quick and easy way to verify. By now, he's probably pulled and rotated it anyway. :)

Problem has been resolved, thank you to all for the help. I did a little of everything and it is perfect now. Wires lined up correctly, the dizzy (rotor) is pointing towards #1 and the engine starts right up. Timing tape installed and now I am just waiting on a free day to get a timing light.

Thanks again for all the help on this.
