My 69 sat has the factory mag wheels, they have the chrome trim rim but i noticed some Magnum wheels don't have that and are all chrome. Is there any other difference as im thinking of buying new rims as mine are really beat up. My other question is tire size,i see were some cars have 15 inch rims. Does 15 inch fit in the stock wheel wells. Is it a big advantage to have a larger tire size. I did always notice my original tires always looked small in the wheel well opening. Thats for putting up with some dumb questions-----steve

As far as memory serves, the "road wheels", without the chrome trim, were used up to 68, and after that had the chrome ring and were called magnum 500's. There's usually a lot of discussion around the naming of the wheels as Ford used them as well so lots of opinions.

I think the biggest advantages of the 15" are in the "looks" dept as well as tire selection. I think you'll find a much larger selection when looking for 15" and they fill the wheel well better, as you say.

When I bought new wheels I got them from Specialty wheels in Portland..Mike did a great job of the custom sizes and pricing was good too!

A lot of disc brake conversion kits require larger wheels as well (caliper spacing).

That's beautiful, you really nailed it with the wheel tire profile, nice stance. That's how they should have came from the factory IMO.

However I always thought all the trim ring wheels were brushed aluminum, no?

Yep...the set I used to have were..I shouldn't have called them chrome

You are correct. the answer is no. Brushed stainless.

Motor Wheel Corporation - Magnum 500's

IIRC actually on the 1968 they still were "called" Road Wheels on Mopars,
without the trim/beauty rings & called Magnum 500's later after 1968 by Mopar,
1968 RR GTX Sat. Bel. etc 'Mid size 5' optional used 14" Chrome "Road Wheels"
1969 - later when they were shared with Ford & GM styling,
that were known as Magnum 500's for a while still since 1965 IIRC on the Brand X cars/wheels,
that all had an added stainless trim/beauty ring, produced by Motor Wheel Corp....

AMC also had a similar wheel only the spokes were an argent color....iirc, these came off of a 69 AMX

So actually the picture with the chrome spokes and chrome trim rings are not "factory". They don't look bad though.

Coker tire references the Road Wheels as the wheels with trim rings (and black paint on the rim rather than chrome). For them, the Magnum 500 is the wheel that has a chrome wheel and is typically used without trim rings.

There seems to be quite a bit of confusion with the naming. The centers of both wheels are the same, so check for paint vs. chrome and go from there - whatever they are called.

I was considering using the chrome wheels with trim rings - not sure if the small slot between the trim ring and wheel would look better if black or chrome...

15" wheels fit great on these cars. The most popular combination seems to be 275/60R15 on 8" wide wheels for the back and 235/60R15 on 7" wide wheels for the front. These fit fantastic, look great and no rubs or issues.
