where to put $1000 in a 440

Used performer RPM intake manifold, .474 lift MP Camshaft, and some 1 3/4 headers which can be bought from summit racing for $130. That's less than $450. Buy an electronic ignition kit and a 750 Vac. Secondary holley carb. All this can be purchased for less than $1000. What some were stating was that the 'odds and ends' are going to cost you probably close to this figure alone; and they would be right. This budget should be considered for performance only and not the budget required to get the 440 into the car. A 440 between the fenderwells with 250hp, is better than a 440 on the stand with 400hp...

point well taken. just have the $(sold norton for this engine) and time(running 318 in car now) with the engine out so want to do it right once. got the headers, got the electronic iggy, got the stripped , dipped and bled on 440 with med. comp cam(with those specs). watching whats on fleabay for preformer and others, just warry of buying from there... Nov. 1st is my for goal in and running

I know comp cams likes to push to .480 lift series for engines with 8.5:1CR. The cylinder heads ports, more than likely will stall at around .510-.520 lift so going with a larger cam is not necessary. You are probably making peak flow around .500 lift with factory castings. Performer RPM is by far the best intake for the dollar spent. I like the MP cams for factory builds, because that is what Mopar designed them for but the comp cam will make similar power with better drive-ability. Get a nice 3,000 stall in the trans and you'll be in business! Hope your build goes great, and try not to lay waste to too many of the local stangs' :hello2: take care.

.............I would offset grind the crank .060, that way u get 13 more cubes and 1.2 compression points..............kim...........

Put it in and run it with just the basics you need. I did virtually the same swap only starting with a fresh bottom end that someone else bought (came with car) and I must be in for at least $2K now and still have some things to get. It will nickle and dime you if you let it. Run what you got and then shop with the future in mind.

my 2 cents.
run it like it is and then, see what is lacking.
electronic ignition is a must! get rid of the points asap. factory setup is good.
add a msd box to get better spark. i would put money into trans for shift kit and saturday night converter. this will make the car easy to start and fun to drive. that stock intake and carb will be fine till you do a upper end kit( heads, cam, intake)
also look into rear gear if you have 2.73 ratio find a 3.55 or 3.73. these changes will make car feel like it has and extra 100 hp.

gearing

hey thanks , as i posted up it is now more like a couple grand now. got the headers, mini starter, trans and motors from schumakers, eninge is rebuilt with 906's with hardend seats, comp cam kit, pistons&rings , got the preformer intake, went with a 750 eddie 1407 with a electric choke kit vac seconds. mallory electric iggy . . the 727 got a transgo stage III kit stock convertor.
going to get all this installed replacing the 318 poly, then need to work on getting a suregrip in place. have access to a ford 9"(more to learn), but want to keep the car mopar as it is coming up on its 50th . 64 440 polara. need to get this part of the project done and play with it for before taking on more.

save some effort and put in a new converter and sfi flex plate converters make such a difference in performance, when getting a race converter the manufacturer will acutally give you a free adjustment if required.
