Which electric ignition?

Ponys!! Sounds like a Ford engine, never heard of ponys in a MoPar.

I have the MoParperformance with a cromebox instead of the orange, heard alot of problem with the orange unit, Pers new Cuda the first thing whe had to replace was the orange box it has just melted an run down.

MSD ready-to-run.

No box, no ballast resistor. Just a distributor and a coil, and if you ever feel you need more (unlikely) a 6AL will tie right into it.

IF I was to stick to the MoPar stuff, it would be the Chrome unit.

However, if moving away from the OE style ignition, I would use a MSD or equal/similar like ignition. Why? Because the multi strike will add gas mileage, a cleaner running idle/part throttle engine, easier starting to a engine that isn't racing.

The Chrome MP box vs MSD in a race arena has shown little difference from what I have tried out. This is in a W.O.T., not part throttle idling around the pit or around town.

MSD, I went from the chrysler electronic ignition to an MSD set up, It made a world of difference.

I have been using the Mallory Hyfire box and Unilite distributors for years now,.. I have heard a few are having minor difficulties, but all mine are running perfect (4 units 4 cars)and I have one of the first off the line 10years old...it's a very simple hookup, and you can use your original system as a back up if you choose, and there really is a noticiable difference in performance, and start up, hot or cold temps.... hope this helps, and good luck in making ur choice...

Hard to argue with the MSD.

I'm running an orange box right now and it seems fine too. The ignition kits shown in the links are probably very similar so you might go with the less expensive Summit version.

I ran the Summit kit before with no problems on my old 383. Currently I have an orange box on a stock re-curved distributor. I thought that an orange box was for the street and chrome for high rpm racing... I DO ALWAYS carry a spare box, ballast and coil in the trunk.

stick with the mopar stuff its reliable you can carry an extra box with you IF you ever need it.and its allot cheaper.no one has ever proved to me were the MSD is any better other than to say they have it.woo!woo! I have seen allot of racers day end because of there MSD went bad and its not like you can go to the local auto parts and get one..OK now let the bashing begin!:argue::argue:........Artie

I run the MP orange box. But I did buy it about 10 years ago. It has been flawless running 10's in my 63 with no problems at all. And as was said if you go aftermarket you cant beat the MSD. Ron

As an alternative you may want to consider this option.

Mopar HEI

While I have not installed this style of mounting bracket I have personally converted serveral vehicles to use the GM HEI module and never had a problem.

Also ... you can walk into any parts store and grab one of these modules for around $20

I just bought, last week, the complete orange box kit from a guy off ebay. It was still in the box and in the sealed bags. Installed it and the car starts better and the drivability is so smooth its unbelievable. Buy the way I paid only $76 plus 15 shipping for the complete kit.

For a street application, i run the mopar performance orange box unit and carry a spare box with me. in my 65 dodge coronet A990 hemi i run the chrome box setup. no problems ever but in my race cars is MSD all the way. I have never had a problem with a MSD digital 6 or 7 box. I even run a MSD 6AL in my 68 hemi roadrunner.

I had an MSD 6AL in a truck of mine for YEARS and never once had a problem. I drove this everyday back and forth to work too.
My current hotrod has a MALLORY unit installed. It has some nice features for setting timing mechanical advance start and full. It has held up for one summer so far... Not saying much for it yet, but I'm sure it will work out just fine.
