any experience with them pros and cons welcome. thanks

That's it!
Where's the other guy with the header/starter fitment problem?
His name was 69Greenleaf. I'm looking for a mini-starter for my 440 with Hooker Headers. I took the factory one off today. WHEW! Had to remove the headers and large factory starter together. Had to raise the motor 4". So a starter for a 1994 Dakota 360 engine should work, right?

Been there done that many times with my GTX. Same drill. Take the header off and jack up the motor to get the stock starter out. Went with a Powermaster mini this time. Claims no heat soak. Let's hope not. Those Hookers are wrapped all around that baby. It's still no picnic getting it in and out. Bought the starter from Summit. About $200. Tried a cheaper one from 440 Source but it burned out in less than 500 miles.

So can you remove the mini starter without removing the headers? Or vice versa? Headers off with starter on?

You also might want to buy a new shield (for mini starters) to go between the starter and bell housing.

So it looks like the heat from the headers and motor tends to literally fry the mini starters? So I would think a heat shield between the headers and starter would help.

The shield I'm talk is for dirt water. It replaces the one on the car now . It has a smaller hole for nose of the starter. I'd wrap the header in the area of the starter to keep the heat off the start or buy wrap for the starter.

I found a mini starter at Advance for a 76 Cordoba with the 400 engine. This looks to be a good one to start with. Only $102. It looks identical to a 94 318 Dodge Dakota, but has a slightly different part number. So I am guessing this one has more torque to turn over the larger engine. It's also $30 more than the 318 mini starter.

Just realized this 318 starter is a re man, maybe that's why it's less money. I think they are the same starter. 400 P/N is 17466SN. 318 P/N is 17466S. Any ideas?

I wanted to try one before I bought a new one. Went to a junkyard 10 miles from home and paid $40. Don't know what it came out of but it spins my Hemi with 11 to 1 compression. I need to put on a wrap before any long drives, it's sitting on the shelf.

Nope - at least not with Hookers. It's still a pita. You don't have to jack up the engine tho. I agree with the post above on the heat shield. I haven't done that yet but will. Heat is a major enemy of the starters when you have headers.

the V6 Dakotas and Vans had a shorter starter VS the V8 cars. they fit the small spaces better.

run one on a 496 with 11.6 compression no problems
