I’m in the middle of assembling my 440 and the oil pickup the machine shop gave me is wrong. It’s way too long.
I have a ‘77 block but am putting on a 6qt Hemi oil pan.

the pick up I have is a Melling 67-71 pick up. Part no. 63-S3.

Looks like I’m dead in the water til I figure this out lol

I had the same problem 2 weeks ago. My pick up came from 440 Source as did the 6 QT pan. Here is what we did. These are not the pictures of mine, but this is what we used as an example. Hope it helps.

As I discovered when I went from the stock pan to the "hemi" pan, they both take the same pickup.
The extra capacity doesn't come from pan depth, but rather from horizontal expansion of the deep
part of the pan.

REALLY.....that's awesome information, thanks...

Looks like my pics :D (I think they are still in "My Photo Garage" pics and how I did the measuring)

You'll find that most aftermarket pickups are made a bit long so the can be modified to fit exactly. That was the manufacturers choice in order to cover their asses. It's the way it is.

Well I am glad you posted them. I was like WTF (Won’t This Fit) :realcrazy:when I went to put my pan on.

If you buy one, be careful where its made. Just got mine from 440 source for the 6 qt hemi pan. Needed the 1/2 inch version. Its made in China!!! Had chinese threads! Would not thread into the block! We had to rethread it. Ruffcut

Yep. Same exact depth between a stock "5 quart" pan and the 6 quart "hemi" pan.
The 6 quart has a "longer" reservoir is all.
Let's see if I can come up with a crappy pic to illustrate:
4qt 6qt side by side.jpg

I bought 2. First from 440 Source and the second from Summit. We tried to heat and bend the first one, which resulted in having to purchase the second from Summit :BangHead:
Cut out a small section from the Summit one as the other guy did. Both wouldn’t allow the pan to go on. Even if the first one could have been bent it was too close to the bottom of the pan in my opinion.

Wait, so when you buy one of these pickups you have to mod them to fit?
Depends on which pickup you choose, of course.
In the case of the 440Source repro of the original hemi pan, it says right in their description:
"Because this pan is a specific depth, our oil pickups may require modifications to match this pan."
I know for fact, having just gone through this whole pan swap thing, that the stock pickup works just fine in them because the depth of both pans is pretty close to identical, as the factory did.

It also means the brand new shiny pickup I bought with the pan from 440Source is gathering dust on my shelf; it turned out to be just that much too long that I'd either have to bend hell out of it or lop it off, then re-thread it.

My engine builder poked the 400 block for the 1/2 inch pickup is my reason for going thru all of this crap. We're doing a 512 in a 400 block. when we did get the thing in we found the connecting rod hit the tube because of the end that was welded on the tube! Had to do some grinding. My guy then said he remembered all the trouble he had on a similar build using 440 source pickup tubes! So, good luck! Ruffcut

I called Mancini and ordered the Mopar Performance pick-up with the dog-leg, based on their recommendation.

Thanks for all the input/advice!
